Chapter 3: Vienna:

Part 1: Find the Library Key

Van Helsing has arrived in Vienna and will be staying in the home of the Duchess Orlowski. The Duchess's residence is in the same building as the University. The Duchess's husband was an university professor, but the good Duke has since died. Seward is also here and he has brought Mina along. Mina is of course ill and is sleeping. Talk to the Duchess and Seward  through all the options you get. So ask successively about "Impregnable abbey", "Your husband", "How to enter", "Key to the university". You will then learn:

Van Helsing has been in Vienna for a day and a night now and has already tried twice to speak to that Brother Alberto, but the brothers in St. Carousel Abbey simply refuse him to entry. Seward studied at the same university that Brother Alberto studied at. But Seward never met that Alberto. Seward says that the Abbey and the University are in the same building. There is a door in the University Library that gives access to the Abbey. The Duchess's  husband, the former Duke Orlowski, held a key from the University Library. The old Duke wanted to use this key as a prize in a test for his students. But the Duke died before the test could be done. This key must be here somewhere in the Duchess's house

Van Helsing, Seward and the Duchess are standing in front of the fireplace in the Duchess's salon. Click with your talk cursor on the Duchess and ..... the Duchess will now hum a melody. Now ask the Duchess about this "Strange melody" and she says that her husband often played this melody on the piano.

Say "Goodbye" and in "Reports" you will read that the melody the Duchess hummed consists of the notes: C, G, D #, F, D, A #, C2. At the bottom left of the screen you can just see a part of a round table. Click with your feet on the round table to move one screen to the left. You will then see the left corner of the room. You see a piano. a large corner bookcase and a white door.

To the left of the white door is a painting of piano keys on the wall. Click with your hand on the white door and .... The door is locked and Van Helsing walks back to the Duchess and asks her where that door leads to. Well ... it is the door to the University Library. Walk back to the left and now, with your eye cursor, look at the piano key painting, which hangs to the left of the door. Van Helsing discovers a chemical formula in the painting.

Go back to the Duchess and speak to her again and then ask her about the "Painting". Van Helsing asks the Duchess about the piano key painting. The Duchess says that this is the only painting her husband has ever made. Go back to the bookcase. Then move your cursor over the bookcase. In the middle part of the bookcase, on the bottom shelf, is a Chemistry Book. In the left part of the bookcase there is a flap that you can open.

Grab the Chemistry Book. In your "reports" you then have a list of chemical formulas. Open the flap at the bottom left of the bookcase.

The opened box appears to contain a small chemical laboratory. You can read about it in "Reports".

Close "Reports" again and you will automatically be in the close-up of the:

Chemistry Puzzle:

The screen shows the sketch of the piano keys and the list of chemical formulas. Below the piano sketch is a rack with test tubes. Each tube contains a colored liquid. Below the list of formulas is the Reset button and there is a tray containing an inexhaustible supply of white litmus paper.

It is the intention that, with the help of the piano sketch and the list of formulas, you will find out the numeric code of the safe of the deceased Duke. The melody that the Duchess hummed consists of 7 notes. You now have to "translate" those 7 notes into numbers and you will do that with the help of the litmus paper and the 12 test tubes.

On the piano sketch you can see that there are 13 keys, white and black. A chemical formula is written on each key. There are 12 test tubes with a colored chemical liquid in each tube. With the help of the formulas on the piano keys, the test tubes, the list of formulas and the litmus paper, you now need to find out which number belongs to the piano keys that make the notes of the melody.

Number the piano keys on the sketch, from left to right, 1 to 13.

Key 1 is the C note.
Key 3 is the D note.
Key 4 is the D # (d minor third) note.
Key 6 is the F note.
Key 8 is the G note.
Key 11 is the A # (a minor third) note.
Key 13 is the C2 note.

You also see the formulas on these keys in the list. In the list of chemical formulas you can read that every substance is also indicated with a color. The order of the key formulas is therefore the order of the notes of the melody, so: C, G, D #, F, D, A #, C2.

On key 1 = C note, the formula of Sodium Chromate is shown and that is the yellow tube.
On key 8 = D note, the formula stands for Copper Sulfate and that is the blue tube.
On key 4 = D #, the formula of Nickle oxide is shown and that is the green tube.
On key 6 = F note, the formula stands for Manganese dioxide and that is the black tube.
On key 3 = D note, the formula of Mercury sulphide is the red tube.
On key 11 = A # note, the formula stands for Sodium dichromate and that is the orange tube.
On key 13 = C2 note, the formula stands for Titanium dioxide and that is the white tube.

Now that you know which test tubes you need you can continue. Take a Litmus paper from the tray and then click it on the relevant tube. A number will then appear under the tube. So you have to get a new litmus paper for each tube. Click with a litmus paper on these tubes and in this order: Yellow, Blue, Green, Black, Red, Orange, White. The number code is then 2, 6, 8, 12, 14, 15, 18

The code is stored in your "Reports". Close the screen and ..... "Perfect ..... on to the next step ..." says Van Helsing.

Go one screen to the left, via bottom left. You will then see the corner of the room, to the left of the piano. Again you see a door. In the corner is a large Viennese porcelain stove. Click on it with the hand cursor and Van Helsing opens a door in the thing and ... has discovered the Safe of the late Duke.

Open up the Safe:

Click on the Safe with your hand cursor to enter the close-up screen.

The safe has a rotary knob of which you can turn the arrow on the numbers 1 to 23.
The lever is to the right of the rotary knob.
At the top left and top right is an arrow button.
By clicking on those 2 arrow buttons you turn the rotary knob to the next digit.
If you click on the top left arrow you will turn the dial, for example, from 5 to 4 etc ...
If you click on the top right arrow, you turn the dial, for example, from 5 to 6.
The Reset button is located under the Rotary Knob.

The code for this safe is therefore: 2, 6, 8, 12, 14, 15, 18. Each time you have to click on the lever between the numbers. Because the rotary knob, when you start, is not set to 1, you can now reset the safe by clicking the Reset button.

The arrow of the Rotary Knob is then on 1. Now you can start and you only have to click on the top right arrow. After every good step, Van Helsing says "Perfect .... on to the next step". If you make a mistake, Van Helsing says that too and you have to start over from 1.

Step 1: Turn the rotary switch to 2. Click on the lever.
Step 2: Turn the rotary switch to 6. Click on the lever.
Step 3: Set the rotary knob to 8. Click on the lever.
Step 4: Turn the rotary switch to 12. Click on the lever
Step 5: Turn the rotary switch to 14. Click on the lever.
Step 6: Turn the rotary knob to 15. Click on the lever.
Step 7: Turn the rotary switch to 18. Click on the lever and .....

The Safe opens. The Safe contains the Library key and a letter from Duke Orlowski. Van Helsing automatically takes the letter and the key from the safe. Van Helsing then talks to Seward. After this conversation, click with your hand cursor in the opened safe and Van Helsing takes out a wooden Angel.

In your "Documents" you read the "Duke Orlowski letter".

In the letter, Orlowski also writes about one of his students, one Baker. Some of Orlowski's students seem to have just disappeared and one of them was Baker's best friend. That Baker talked about "angels" and "demons" that would be in the library. Close "Documents" and go back one screen to the right, to the Library door.

Select the Key in your "Items" and then click on the white door and ...... you end up in:

Part 2: The University Library:

Van Helsing has to find the Secret Door to the Abbey here in the library. The library has a balcony that you can reach via the stairs in the back. Reading tables are located in the center of the room. On the left is a large mobile ladder that is used to reach the highest shelves of the left cabinets. At the bottom center is the librarian's desk. A chandelier hangs from the ceiling

Go down one screen at the bottom right. Van Helsing will then be standing next to the bottom right reading table and in front of a semicircular cupboard full of large green pots. Apparently it is the "Medical" section of the library. There is a large pendulum clock on the back wall and the desk is underneath that clock. To the left of the clock is a red tapestry with the University logo.

Click with your hand cursor on the red tapestry. Van Helsing pushes the carpet aside and ... There is a wooden plate in the wall.

To the right of the Board is the print of a bloody hand. View the handprint. Click on the wooden plate. Van Helsing says that some things are missing. In the close-up screen you will see the wooden board. In the box next to the Board are a few Angels and Demons. There are more Demons than Angels.

If you look closely at the wooden plate you will see the contours of a jigsaw puzzle in the bottom of the plate. Because that is this puzzle. It is a Jigsaw Puzzle. So you have to puzzle the Demons and the Angels into the plate just like a jigsaw puzzle. However, you cannot start doing the puzzle just yet because some Angels are missing. So you will have to look for them first. There is no Reset button, so I wouldn't start on this puzzle just yet. Zoom out

Find the Angels and 1 Demon:

Walk back to the center of the library and then click on the balcony stairs with your feet at the top to go to the balcony via the stairs.

Right at the top of the stairs you are facing a map of Europe on the wall.

Click on the Europe map. As we all know, from various Dracula books and Dracula films that you have undoubtedly read and seen in your life, Dracula comes from Transylvania, a province of Hungary. So look up Hungary on the map and then the gray county of Transylvania. Click on Transylvania and ... Transylvania comes up and you have found an Angel. Grab the Angel.

On the balcony, go one screen to the right. You are then on the right balcony and just before the 1st window niche. However, Van Helsing is a nuisance to the first bookcase. Continue to the next bookcase. You do this by clicking on the floor in front of Van Helsing with your normal arrow cursor. If Van Helsing is then at the 2nd bookcase, you will see, on the middle shelf of the 1st bookcase, again a light gray Angel glued to a brown book. Grab the Angel.

Van Helsing also grab the book. It is the "Robert" Bob "Herzog's Work" book and you read the yellow page in "Documents". It describes a crossbow. Close "Documents". Walk back, via bottom left, to the stairs and click on the steps. You will see Van Helsing again at the top of the stairs. Click with your feet now at the bottom left of the stairs.

Van Helsing descends the stairs and then stands in front of the table to the left of the stairs. This is the Cutting Table. On the yellow cloth, which is on the table, is a frog cut into pieces. Watch the Frog. On the left of the frog cloth is a paper cutter (Paper cutter). Grab the Paper Cutter. To the right of the frog cloth is a tweezers. Grab the Tweezers.

Behind the table, between the bookcases, is a large display case in which dried Butterflies hang. Get the eye cursor on that butterfly display case and then view the display case first. Van Helsing thinks one of the butterflies is very rare. Click with your hand cursor on the butterfly display case and .... Van Helsing tries to grab that rare "butterfly", but the display case is locked. Select in "Items" the paper cutter you just found and then click on the display again and the display case is then open.

Click again with the hand cursor on the now opened showcase and now you finally grab that rare "butterfly" and this turns out to be another Angel .

Between the last two boxes, so to the right of the butterfly display case, is a large Radio. Click on the Radio with your hand cursor. Van Helsing walks towards it and you enter the close-up screen. At the top of the sliding slot, which is on the right side of the radio, an Angel is attached with a paper clip. Grab the Angel.

You zoom out again. Now click with your feet on the floor in front of the fireplace and ..... You will then see the left side of the balcony stairs. There is a winch in a niche in the staircase side. With the winch you can lower the large Chandelier of the library. On the left is a poker leaning against the side of the stairs.

Before you forget, first grab the Poker. Then click with the hand cursor on the rotary handle of the winch and ..... the large Chandelier comes down a bit. Walk one screen to the right, through the center right, and then, through the bottom center, back to the center of the room. Van Helsing is standing in front of the stairs and the chandelier hangs above him. Click on the chandelier with your hand cursor.

There is something in the chandelier, but it is still hanging too high. Click with the hand cursor on the mobile ladder, which is against the left cabinets, behind the left reading tables. Van Helsing then walks to the mobile ladder and puts the huge thing in "Items". Select the mobile ladder in your "Items" and then click with the cursor on the chandelier and .... Van Helsing puts the Trap under the chandelier. Click again with the hand cursor on the chandelier (not on the stairs and not with the feet on the stairs) and you climb up b and then look at the chandelier from above. Grab the Angel, which is on top of the chandelier.

You will then be standing on the floor of the hall again. Now go to the right side of the balcony stairs. You are then in the Anatomy department. In the 2 rear niches there is a skeleton. The front skeleton huh wear pants and a hat upside down. The pants are held up by red braces. Click with your hand on the chest of the front skeleton and Van Helsing grabs the red Braces.

Walk back through the bottom of the screen and then via the bottom right all the way back to the Medical section of the library, i.e. to the bottom right corner. So you are back at the Wooden Board. So there are a lot of large jars in the semicircular cupboard. You have looked at these jars before, but now you get the hand cursor on one of the jars. It is the middle jars on the 2nd shelf from the bottom.

Click with your hand cursor on that green jar. There is something in the jar, but Van Helsing cannot open the pot. In "Items" combine the Poker with the Braces  into an "Obedience collar". Select this thing and then click on the jar in the cupboard again and the jar is then open. In "Items" deselect the bow and then select the Tweezers and click again with your hand cursor on the jar and you will fish out a Demon. You have now found all Angels and a Demon. So you can now do the jigsaw puzzle on the wooden plate. Click again on the round Wooden plate, in the back wall.

You end up in the close-up again. You are in the:

Angels and Demons puzzle:

There are 6 gray Angels and 6 Demons. You must place the Angels and Demons on the plate. The Angels and Demons fit together. It is nothing more than an ordinary jigsaw  puzzle. Pick up the Angels and the Demons and then click them in the right place on the plate. You cannot rotate an Angel or a Demon, so the shape of the Angel / Demon shows where to click the piece on the plate. The pieces automatically click into place.

When you have solved the puzzle, the secret door opens and Van Helsing automatically enters:

Part 3: St. Carousel Abbey:

Wine cellar:

You can't go back to the library because the secret door is closed behind Van Helsing. Van Helsing has ended up in the wine cellar of the Abbey. You are standing in front of a desk. The window behind the desk is barricaded. In the left bookcase stand a St. Michael statue. St. Michael is holding a Spear. Grab the Spear. There is a door in the front side of the desk, but that door is protected by a wolf's head. At the right stone pillar there is a basket full of cloths. Grab a Linen cloth from the basket. In "Items", select the Spear (St. Michael's spear) and then click on the wolf's head that is on the front of the desk.

The door will now open and you will now see a green Safe door. Click on the green Safe door and you end up in the close-up and you are in the:

Ball Safe puzzle:

The safe door has a large yellow circle. In the circle is a triangle of lines. The Reset button is in the middle of the circle. There is a Ball in the 8 points of the Triangle. If you place the cursor on a point, the ball in that point turns yellow. Then click on the ball and you will see to which other point of the Triangle you can move that ball.

The aim of the puzzle is that all 8 balls and all lines turn yellow at the same time. So you have to click on a Ball point to make it yellow and then click on the point where you want the ball to go.

Several solutions are possible. Here is my solution and you need 8 moves for that. Number the 8 ball points, from top right to top left, 1 to 8.

Then click on the ball points in this order:

Move 1: click on ball point 7 and then on ball point 4.
Move 2: click on ball point 6 and then on ball point 1.
Move 3: click on ball point 3 and then on ball point 6.
Move 4: Click on ball point 8 and then on ball point 3.

Move 5: Click on ball point 5 and then on ball point 8.
Move 6: Click on ball point 2 and then on ball point 5.
Move 7: Click on ballpoint 7 and then on ballpoint 2.
Move 8: Click on ballpoint 7 and ........ the Safe will OPEN.

In the Safe there is a chalice and a key. Grab the chalice. It is "The Cup of Targovise". Grab the Key from the safe.

Walk down the bottom of the screen. You will see a semicircular niche with shelves. On the bottom shelf is a barrel of schnapps. To the right of the niche is a broom and next to the broom is a Broomstick. View the barrel. Click on the barrel with your hand cursor. Unfortunately .... the faucet in the barrel is stuck. In "Items" select the Paper Cutter again and then click again on the barrel of Schnapps and ..... "Schnapps" comes on the floor and someone screams ..... WATCH OUT !!! ...

Grab the Broomstick Click with your feet in the gate and ..... oooo ...... this seems to me to be the slaughterhouse. Besides that there are 2 cadavers hanging, there is also a guy hanging on the beam. Clearly dead. 2 rats are sitting on a bag under the guy

Click on the bag with the hand cursor. It's the bag of Baker, the student that Duke Orlowski talks about in his letter. So the dead hanging guy must be Baker. You can't take the bag as long as those rats are on it. So combine in your "Items" the Broomstick with the Linen Cloth and you have a Torch. Then light up  your Torch with your Matches. Put the matches back on and select the burning torch and click on the rats and ...

You should now click on a Rat with your hand cursor, and not on the bag. When you click on the bag, Van Helsing says "No I cannot do that". So to chase the rats away with the torch you have to click on, or nearby,  the top RAT. When the rats are gone, click on the bag again. Van Helsing opens the bag. Click on the bag again and you take out a bottle of Holy Water.

Enter the hallway under the cadavers. At the end of the hallway you are in front of a closed wooden door. A monk's robe hangs on the left wall. In your "Items" select the key that you took from the ball safe and then click the lock of the door with the hand cursor. Unfortunately ... the key is not for this door. Grab the Monk's Robe and .... Van Helsing will automatically put on the Monk's robe

Dressed in the Monk's robe, go back to the wine cellar and .......... A "Monk from Hell" follows Van Helsing and then blocks Van Helsing in the wine cellar. Quickly select the Burning Torch in your "Items" and then click with your hand cursor on the pool of Schnapps, on the floor under the schnapps barrel and ........

the monk flies on fire and disappears. A large black scorch mark remains on the floor. There is now a light key for that scorch mark. Grab the Key

Go back to the door at the end of the corridor. In "Items", select the light Key just found and click on the lock of the door again and the door opens now.

So go through the now opened door. Van Helsing ends up in the:

Main Hall:

Monks are performing a satanic ritual, Van Helsing sees Brother Alberto trapped in a cage. The cage where Brother Alberto is locked in is located at the bottom right. The 3 monks stand in front of the altar in a bloody pentagram painted on the floor. Continue to the 3 monks in the pentagram. On the right is a Golden Chalice on a pillar. Click with your hand cursor on the chalice. Van Helsing says that the 3 monks regularly take a sip from the chalice. In your "Items" combine your chalice with the Holy Water. You then have a chalice with holy water. Select the chalice and then click with the hand cursor on the chalice on the pillar.

Van Helsing exchanges both chalices. Go back, through the bottom of the screen, one screen and ...

One of the 3 crazy monks takes a sip from the chalice with Holy Water and ... crashes death on the floor. The other 2 monks are going to ... eat the dead monk.

Quickly .... walk, from bottom right, to the cage where Brother Alberto is locked up. Talk to Brother Alberto.

Brother Alberto's leg is broken. Ask Alberto for the "Texts". Unfortunately .... Alberto can't read the papyrus scrolling because the crazy monks have blinded him. Then ask "Save Mina". Alberto says that Dracula can only be defeated in his native soil. Once Dracula is defeated and disappeared, Mina will automatically heal. So Van Helsing cannot deliver and take Brother Alberto. He has to leave poor Alberto here.

On the right you see large double doors. Select the dark Key in your "Items" and then click with the hand cursor on the round door handles and ....

Van Helsing automatically returns to the home of Duchess Orlowski. The Duchess and Seward are in a panic.

Mina is gone, kidnapped by Dracula. Van Helsing and Seward set out for the Castle of Count Dracula, to:
