Chapter 8: Castle: Part 1: Reaching Castle, Portcullises, Well

From now on the game will become linear. You no longer have the freedom to do things in your own order. You also always have to switch between Tove and her father Hendrik. Tove and Hendrik are in the same places, but Tove is in a different dimension than Hendrik, so they don't see each other. Tove needs Hendrik and Hendrik needs Tove to solve puzzles and the like. Stuff that Tove picks up also ends up in Hendrik's inventory and it works the other way around

Chapter 8: Castle: Part 1: Gate and Well / Prison, Vulture Puzzles

A: Hendrik:  Forest

Hendrik ended up in the woods in search of his children Tove and Lars. At the top right are the red remains of the sled, with which Tove and Lars fled the house. Walk to the remains and look at it with your eye. Hendrik then knows that he is on the right path.

Walk up from the sledge remnants . Hendrik then finds the marbles left behind here by Lars and Tove. Look at the marbles and ....

.... After some musing, Hendrik then automatically continues and we switch back to Tove in the clearing where the portal is almost ready.

Back at Hendrik in the forest you walk to the left. Hendrik then comes to a few ravens who are sitting on a tree trunk

Continue to the left and ........ Hendrik will find a second series of marbles near the trees. Look at the marbles and .......

..... Hendrik disappears between the trees and ..... We end up back at Tove in the clearing where Hendrik now also appears.

Hendrik just sees how Tove disappears through the portal, but he is too late to follow Tove through the portal

You are still Hendrik. The oar Tove took from the rowboat is still standing at the entrance to the Tree of Many. Take the oar

Continue to the rowboat.

When you looked at the rowboat as Tove, the thing was leaky, but the rowboat is no longer and there is even a 2nd oar in the boat.

Click with your gripping hand on the rowboat and ....

...... Hendrik sails in the rowing boat across the lake to the castle and goes ashore

B: Castle: 

Outside Gate

Hendrik and Tove

You are still Hendrik. Tove is standing at the gate of the castle, but Hendrik cannot see Tove and Tove cannot see her father. Tove and Hendrik are both in the same place, but they are each in a different dimension. If you are Hendrik you see a transparent Tove and if you are Tove you see a transparent Hendrik

Continue to the gate of the castle and then view the transparent Tove.

Hendrik cannot see Tove, but he "feels" that someone is present and he thinks it is his deceased wife Eva

The game automatically switches to Tove and you get the message about how to switch between Tove and Hendrik

The game says you have to press F1 + Spacebar to switch between Tove and Hendrik. But I can also do this by just pressing my F1 key. If you are Hendrik and you need to become Tove, then press F1 / Spacebar. If you are Tove and you have to become Hendrik, you also press F1 / Spacebar. Tove and Hendrik share the inventory, so items that you pick up as Tove or as Hendrik can be used as Tove and as Hendrik. Tove and Hendrik also share the diary. To refresh your memory, open the diary by pressing your J key. Hendrik and Tove have to work together to get things done and to solve puzzles

Now become Hendrik and walk to the right. To the right of the gate are 2 statues. There is a disc in the left statue. Take that disc

The discis the Moon disc because it has a crescent moon on it .... You will now also receive the message about the shared use of the inventory

Walk to the left and then walk up into the left corner. In this corner is a crate. Look at the crate with your eye and ....

...... Hendrik finds a note in the crate and he reads what is on the note and then he automatically takes a Climbing Piton from the crate

Walk back to the 2 statues and now go behind the 2 statues. Hendrik is then at a barred window in the wall.

Click your hand on the barred window and .... Hendrik bends the bars further apart, but he is too thick to slip through the opening.

So switch to Tove and bring Tove to the barred window and then crawl through the window and .....

... Tove ends up in the 1st courtyard of the castle. Look around here asTove.

On the left is the gate to the second courtyard, but that gate is closed. You also see a ladder, but the ladder is frozen so Tove cannot climb up the ladder. A pressure plate protrudes into the ground in the middle of the courtyard. When you put Tove on that pressure plate, she presses the plate a bit and you see that a lever appears in the wall, to the left of the gate to the 2nd courtyard. Walk down from the pressure plate and Tove will be at  the outside gate. To the left and right, a round holder is sticking into the wall. In the left holder, Tove must place the Sun Disk and in the right holder she must place the Moon Disk. Hendrik has already found the Moon Disk and it is now also in Tove's backpack.

Walk back to the pressure plate and then walk to the left. You will see a higher suspended platform. You can also see the left weight of the gate in the gate of the 2nd courtyard. Climbing stones stick to the wall. Climb up to the platform via those climbing stones and then go through the opening in the wall

Tove lands on a ledge. The Sun Disc hangs in the antlers of the deer statue. Take the Sun Disc

Go back through the hole in the wall and then climb back down the climbing stones. Back on the ground, move Tove back to the bottom gate.

Then place the Sun disc in the left holder and the Moon disc in the right holder and ...

..... The outer gate opens. Switch to Hendrik and move Hendrik into the courtyard and then put him on the pressure plate.

The lever, to the left of the inner gate, reappears

Become Tove again and walk to the lever and use the lever now ......

unfortunately .... the inner gate does not open because one of the weights is not heavy enough.

As Tove, climb back up via the climbing stones and then go through the hole in the wall again.

Tove is then back on the ledge where she previously took the Sun Disc. Now there is a block of stone in the corner here. Take that block of stone

Switch to Hendrik. Hendrik is still on the pressure plate. Walk to the right, to the ladder. Climb up the ladder to the ledge and the right weight

On the ledge you place Hendrik in front of the weight. Take the block of stone from inventory and place the block on the weight ...

Climb back down the ladder and put Hendrikje back on the pressure plate. Become Tove again and climb down again via the climbing stones

Because Hendrik is on the pressure plate, the lever has reappeared. So use the lever again and ....

... because of the extra weight that Hendrik has placed on the right weight, the inner gate now opens ....

As Tove walk through the now opened inner gate and Tove will end up in the inner courtyard. Vultures hang in cages here and there, so I refer to this courtyard as the Vulture Courtyard. This courtyard consists of a lower part and a higher part. In the low part you can see the well and you can go left and right. Continue to the well. Look at the well ...... The grate that closes the well is frozen solid.

Walk up the wide steps to the higher part of the courtyard. All gates here are closed. Walk to the left gate. In front of the left gate there are 2 places on the floor that you can look at, so do that. Climbing stones stick to the wall in the corner. Climb up through those climbing stones and ......

........ Tove ends up on top of the left wall of the castle ......

You can follow the wall to the left and also down the stairs, but now go right through the gate. Tove ends up in a Watchtower room. A dead vulture is convulsing on the floor and the corpse has a spear. Take the spear. On the wall is a bookcase full of books. Look at the bookcase ..... there are a few books missing in the bookcase.

Switch to Hendrik and as Hendrik also go through the inner gate to the well in the vulture courtyard.

You will have noticed that when you are Hendrik all the ice has disappeared, so now the well is not frozen

So use the Spear found by Tove on the grate of the well and ...... Hendrik removes the grate

Become Tove again and go back through the left gate to the wall. Then climb back down the climbing stones, right in the corner, to the floor of the Vulture Courtyard.

Back down you walk down to the well, which has been opened by Hendrik, Climb via the climbing stones down into the well and ......

Tove ends up underground via the well in the:

 Prison:

Immediately to the left is the bucket of the well. Look at the bucket and then click with your gripping hand ....

Tove takes a round Keystone from the bucket. The stone has a sun pattern

Walk to the right and ..... Tove ends up in the left cell of the prison.

The door is locked, but to the right of the door you can squeeze Tove out through the curved bars.

Do that and then walk to the right and up to the 2nd cell

A torture device hangs on the left wall. Continue to the 2nd cell.

Again, 2 bars are bent but the opening is too narrow for Tove to crawl through. There is a dead vulture in the cell

Continue to the right. Tove ends up in the second part of the prison. There is a dead vulture in the front cell. To the left of this cell is a Mortar but Tove cannot enter the cell to get the mortar. The cell door will not open and the opening in the bars is too narrow for Tove to crawl into the cell.

Continue to the right and then further up the stairs. Tove ends up in the 3rd part of the prison.

At the top of the stairs is the Exit, but that door is locked. On the right there are 2 dead vultures on the benches. Continue to the right vulture.

The right vulture has a key in the left claw. Take the key ... Tove breaks the claw with the key from the vulture.

...... it is the key for the Exit door at the top of the stairs but that door can only be opened from the outside, so switch to Hendrik. Walk to the right from the well and then disappear through the gate and Hendrik will end up in the Prison Courtyard. The right gate will not open. In the back wall is the prison door, which is where Tove is now. Behind the left weight of the gate you see a lever. There is a crack in the wall to the right of the prison door.

Check out the crack in the wall. Use the Key Tove pulled from the vulture's claw on the prison door to open the door

Stay Hendrik and walk into the prison and down the stairs.

Then, as Hendrik, first go to the right and descend the stairs and then continue to the last cell, where you have already been as Tove.

On the bench you can now pick up a Loot Item here as Hendrik.

Back up and then to the left, to the 2nd part of the prison, and on to the torture device that hangs on the wall in the 1st part.

A hammer is now hanging on the wall near the torture device. Take the hammer. Then bend the curved bars of the 2nd cell further apart

Back to the right, to the cell where the mortar is located. Again bend the curved bars further apart

Switch back to Tove and now bring her back to the cell where the Mortar is located

Enter the cell through the bent bars and then take the mortar

Go further back to the 2nd cell, at the torture device and enter this cell via the bent bars.

You can then pick up a Loot Item at the beak of the vulture

Back to the 2 vultures at the exit. Walk past the vultures to the right, down the stairs and then go further up to the last cell

In this last cell there is also a dead vulture, but Tove cannot enter the cell and there are no bent bars. Tove must find another way to end up in this cell. 

Take Tove back to the Exit and out into the small courtyard. Then switch back to Hendrik

Take Hendrik out via the Exit to the Prison courtyard. The to lift the the right gate hangs in the top right corner.

Use the Climbing Piton / hammer on the crack in the wall

Hendrik rams the climbing piton into the crack. Become Tove again and then climb up the piton and climbing stones to the lever. Use the lever

..... the gate is raised. Stay Tove and climb back down and now go through the gate and Tove will end up on the

D: East Courtyard.

Go up the stairs and then continue and ....... Tove ends up on the Sundail.

Check out everything you can on the sundial. You can't do this puzzle right now because you have to collect a few things first.

Walk further up. A dead vulture sits on a bench. There is a wooden cart in the niche. To the left is a closed gate to the Vulture Courtyard with a lever hanging next to it. On the ledge above the sitting vulture is an item that Tove and Hendrik need for the sundial, but Tove cannot reach it. First go to the lever and then use it to open up the gate to the Vulture Courtyard.

Switch back to Hendrik and take him from the Prison Courtyard to the East Courtyard as well

Walk up the stairs and across, or past, the Sundial, to the wooden cart.

Climb up the stone steps and then let Hendrik fall onto the left side of the cart.

Hendrik is now standing on the left side of the cart. The cart is a seesaw. Hendrik is heavier than Tove. Switch to Tove.

Also walk up the stone steps, jump on the cart and continue to the right side of the cart.

Hendrik is heavier than Tove, so Tove is now on the top side of the cart and can now take that item off the ledge.

Take that Item. It turns out to be a square tile with a snowflake design on it

Become Hendrik again. On the bench, where the vulture sits when you're Tove, is a note.

Look at that note and then listen to Hendrik. The note tells something about the sundial.

There are two crates in the corner. The left crate is empty. Use the Spear on the right crate and then take a Book. There is a bird on the cover of the book, so this is the bird book. This is one of the 3 missing books from the bookcase in the watchtower room, where Tove found the Speer

Walk down to the sundial, and then climb up the stairs, to the right, and ..... Hendrik ends up on top of the castle wall.

Immediately turn left into the corner. Hendrik can pick up a Loot Item from the stones on the ground. Take that Loot Item.

Walk up and go under the green arch to the back wall.

There are climbing stones on the back wall and there is a crack in the wall. Check out the crack in the wall

Go right and look at the crate there by the wall. Hendrik reads a note and then he takes the second round Keystone from the box

Walk down and then climb the stairs to the higher part of the wall. There is a cage on the tree. Walk to the left. Hendrik cannot continue because the "bridge" hangs up and the lever to lower the "bridge" is on the other side. A Climbing Piton sticks into the round tree root. Take the Climbing Piton

Switch to Tove. Jump off the wooden cart and stand in front of the vulture sitting on the bench.

Watch the vulture, which then loses its head. Click with your gripping hand on the vulture and ..... Tove finds a Loot Item and that is a straw doll

Now bring Tove further up, to the hanging cage, and ..... Tove cannot go further because of a vulture.

The vulture blocks Tove's way to the "bridge". Tove has to get that vulture into the cage.

Switch to Hendrik and bring Hendrik back down and to the wall where the crack is, so the wall behind the green arch.

Then ram the just found climbing piton into the crack in the wall

Become Tove again and bring her back to the wall / Hendrik and then climb up the climbing stones to the fruit hanging on the branches. Take the Fruit

Now bring Hendrik and Tove back to the hanging cage. As Hendrik, you open the cage. Then become Tove again and put the piece of Fruit in the opened cage and .....

The vulture enters the cage, attracted by the fruit and ..... Tove and Hendrik "feel" each other's presence and Tove screams that Hendrik must close the cage and Hendrik does that.

You are automatically Tove again and the vulture is now locked in the cage.

Walk to the left and then climb, via the climbing stones on the wall, to the other side and then use the lever to lower the "bridge"

Bring Hendrik over the "bridge" to Tove and then immediately continue to the left and ..... 

Via a stone staircase Hendrik climbs up on the outer wall of the castle.

Become Tove and take her to Hendrik, on top of the wall. As Tove you see that there are vultures on the wall, so Tove does not want to continue.

E: The Vultures Puzzle:

Switch to Hendrik. First take Hendrik all the way to the left, to the tower. The door in the tower is locked and we don't have the key yet

Walk back a bit. On the wall are 3 chain mechanisms, A, B, C with which Hendrik can hoist 3 cages up / down. Those 3 cages hang behind Hendrik and they are now all 3 hanging down. A lever is attached to the left mechanism A. In the rod of the mechanism you see lock 1 and lock 2. You can place a gear in those 2 locks, but we don't have one yet. If you click the lever, only cage 1 will now come up.

Click the lever and ......

... Cage 1 rises. Open cage 1 and switch to Tove.

Now move Tove to the left as well, up to the stone stairs that go down. You now see that there are 2 vultures in the cove and they guard the key to the tower door.

Go down the stone stairs and then get the fruit hanging in the hole of the wall

Climb back up and bring Tove to Hendrik, who has opened Cage 1. You will now also see a 3rd vulture guarding that tower door. Put the Fruit in Cage 1 and ..... see what happens ...... the vulture at the door walks into the cage and Tove screams that Hendrik has to close the cage again and good Hendrik does that.

Vulture 1 is out of the way. Walk, as Tove, to the door and pick up the Gear, which is to the right of the door in the corner.

Another piece of fruit hangs to the left of the door. Climb up the climbing stones and get the fruit

Bring Tove back to Hendrik and then switch to Hendrik. Now the front of the other 2 Vultures must be caught in the middle cage.

 But to prevent the vulture currently in cage 1 from warning the other vultures, cage 1 must first be lowered again. 

Click the lever again ...... Cage 1 then drops down ......

all 3 cages are now down again. Now only the middle cage should come up. Now place the gear in Slot 1

... Click the lever again and ...... Cage 1 and Cage 2 now come up. Cage 1 has to go down, so take the gear out of slot 1 again

Click the lever again and ..... Cage 1 drops down again but Cage 2 stays up. Open cage 2

Switch to Tove and put the fruit in Cage 2 and ... see what happens .....

The 2nd vulture has now also been caught, so return Tove to the cove. 

The 3rd vulture is still in the back of the cove, but Tove can now enter the cove and then to the right. 

Tove is then on a "balcony" and here is the 3rd piece of fruit and the 2nd gear. Take the Gear and take the Fruit

Bring Tove back to Hendrik and then switch back to Hendrik

Click Lever to lift Cage 1 up again. Then place 1 of your 2 gears in Slot 1

Click lever to lower cages 1 and 2. Place the 2nd gear in Slot 2

Click Lever and ..... all 3 cages now come up at the same time.

Only cage 3 should now be up, so cages 1 and 2 should be lowered again, so take the gear back out of Slot 2. Leave the other gear in slot 1

The gear wheel should now only be in slot 1. Click lever and ...... Cages 1 and 2 go down but cage 3 stays up. Open cage 3

Switch to Tove and put the 3rd piece of fruit in cage 3 and see what happens ...

The 3rd Vulture is trapped in Cage 3 and Tove can now take the key.

So go get the key from the cove

Become Hendrik and go down the stone stairs. At the bottom of the stairs Hendrik can pick up a Shovel, so take the Shovel

Back up and return to the closed tower door and now open the door with the Key found by Tove.

Enter the tower room as Hendrik. We will continue in .....
