Chapter 2: The Frozen North:

Part 1: The Polar Bear

After the hunt for the hijacked train Kate and Youki are in the snow, on the path to the right of the rails. Open your inventory and see that Kate now only has the box of matches.. However, the scroll, the Alexei book and the newspaper are also in the "documents" section of the inventory.

Close the inventory and now go to the right via middle right.

We then see the train and we see Ivan Bourgoff appear on the rear balcony. Ivan screams to Kate: "Kate Walker ..... The ivory is ours .....". So that's why the Bourgoff's hijacked the train. For the "white gold of Syberia". Kate is then back on the snow path on the next screen. Walk to the right by simply clicking with your "round cursor" on the right side of the screen and repeat it again. Then click on the right side of the screen to go to the next screen. You will see a tree and on the right branch of the tree sits t a White Dove. On the right in this screen is a pile of stones. Click on the pile of stones

In the close-up screen we see that this is an antique stone oven. There is a stiff frozen fish in the oven. Click on the fish. Kate says she must first defrost the ice around the fish before she can take the fish. Kate has matches, but no fuel to light a fire, so you close the close-up screen. Then walk to the right and continue by clicking on the right side of the screen. Keep following the path until a LOADING follows. After the LOADING you see the river. Youki sees a beaver in the river and runs away to the river and goes barking on the bank to that beaver. Click on Youki and Kate walks towards the animal.

Click on Youki a few times, but the stupid animal refuses to continue to obey Kate. How does Kate Youki get Youki to obey her again? Kate no longer has Fish Sweets, but she knows where she can get a real fish. Walk back to the path via the bottom of the screen. Then click, left of Kate, between the two trees to continue a screen. Kate comes to the end of the path and to a clearing. In the middle of this clearing there are some boulders and at those boulders there are some dry branches in the snow. Click on the left rock or on the branches, and Kate walks towards it and grabs some branches.

On the right you can see just a bit of the fast flowing river and you can also click there. Kate then sees a house and says that it is at the bottom of the waterfall. Go back to the screen with Youki and then follow the path back to the left until you are back at the Stone Oven. Click on the Oven again. In the Close-up window you select the Branches in inventory and then, at the bottom of the oven, click on the "hole in the snow". Kate lays the branches at the bottom of the oven. Take the matches from your inventory and then click on the branches and .....

Kate set  the branches on fire, You have to wait until the fire is out again. You will automatically return to the close-up. Grab the now defrosted fish and close the close-up.

Follow the path back to the right until you are back at Youki. Click on Youki again to come to him. Take the Fish from your inventory and then click on Youki again.

Cut Scene:  Kate lures Youki with the fish to the clearing and gives the fish to Youki. Youki hear a sound and runs back to the river.

Follow Youki back to the river. A tree has now fallen over and it is now laying over the river. Click on Youki to get back to him. Click on the fallen tree trunk.

Cut Scene: Kate and Youki walk across the fallen tree to the other side of the river.

On the other side you just walk to the right until you get, in the bend of the path, the yellow arrow cursor. Then click and Kate continues to the next screen.

Cut Scene: Kate's boss has contact with that detective Cantin. Cantin has arrived in Romansburg and he's after Kate

Kate and Youki arrived at a fork in the path. There is a path to the right and a path to the left. If you take the right path via the top right, you will reach the next screen and notice that you can not go any further. Go back to the junction via the left side of the screen and then take the left path via the top left. Kate then arrives at the gap.

The rope bridge to the other side has collapsed and is hanging down. Go through the middle right to the next screen and Kate will arrive at:

The Wooden house:

Walk on to the wooden house.

Kate receives a call from her mother who tries to persuade her again to be "wise". Kate does not want to be "wise" at all and she ends this conversation quickly

Click on the front door of the Wooden House. Kate goes inside. You see the fireplace with the large stone mantelpiece.

On the mantelpiece a wooden beam has been placed on which some things are standing. Click the wooden beam to see it in close-up.

In the close-up you see a pile of books on the beam....one of the books is lying flat on the beam. You will also see 3 Russian dolls. Click on that one book that's lying flat

The book will be open in your screen. Read the article about the Orange Salmon because it is important information. Among other things you read that the Orange Salmon is fond of green frogs / toads. Remember this and close the close-up. Then grab the left Russian doll. The doll goes to your inventory. Where this doll stood on the bar you now see an Ax.......... Grab the Ax. Then close all close-ups.

Click on the front door to go outside again ............

Kate opens the door, but Youki refuses to leave the house, however Kate insists. After a few seconds Kate will find out why Youki does not want to go outside.

A real POLAR BEAR appears in the doorway and Kate quickly slams the door shut.

Get rid of the Polar Bear:

To the left of the door is a window. Click on the window. In the close-up Kate looks outside through the window and sees that that polar bear is staggering back and forth at the front of the house. Kate is locked up. Close the close-up. Go through the room, via the bottom of the screen, and on the next screen you will see the back wall of the living room. Also a window and a door. That door is the back door, but Kate does not want to leave the house right now. Go l a screen to the left and Kate is in the kitchen corner.

Click on the kitchen counter, left of the stove. In the close-up you see a basket standing between the two plates. Grab the basket. It is a fish basket.

Catch a Orange Salmon

Close the close-up. Go back via bottom right and then click on the back door. Kate comes outside and stands on the jetty behind the house. Go down the stairs to the lower part of the jetty.

On the right you see the waterfall and you also see a small fence with a fishing pole attached on it.

In Alexei's notebook you have read that bears and Youki's are fond of the orange salmon. In the orange salmon article of the "fisherman's guide" book you have read that orange salmon is a meat eater but one that is very precise about the color of its prey. The favorite food of the orange salmon is the green frog. You can read all this again in the mentioned books via the "documents" section of your inventory.

Kate has to catch an Orange Salmon to feed it to that stupid polar bear. The Fish Basket, however, can only contain 1 fish, so you will have to try several times. Let's just start. Click on the Fishing Rod. Kate then takes out the fish basket and places it on the jetty, in front of Youki. Then she walks to the fishing rod and takes it in her hand.

Kate has to do bait on the hook of the rod. A chest with fist bait stands in front of Kate's feet. Click on the bait chest .......

In the close-up screen you see that there are 9 "bait flies" in the chest. The upper right "bait fly" is green and looks a bit like a frog / pad. Well ... Orange salmon is fond of green frogs / toads, so click on the green "Fly", top right in the chest. You go out of this close-up and you are back in the fishing rod screen. There are 4 places in the river where you can now cast your fishing rod. I will briefly describe these 4 places:

  • Right before Kate a dead tree trunk floats in the water. Take this tree trunk as your starting position.

  • Two fishing spots are then on the left side of the tree trunk.

  • The first is just to the left of the tree trunk and the second is slightly further to the left of the white boulders that you see in the water.

  • To the right of the tree trunk is also a fishing spot, almost on the right edge of the screen.

  • The 4th fishing spot is to the right of Kate and at the level of the right side of the tree trunk but just before the jetty.

  • You have to find the fishing spot where you can catch the Orange Salmon.

  • The Blue Salmon is swimming at the white boulders.

  • Left of tree trunk B swims the Green Salmon.

  • On the right side of tree trunk C  swims the Purple Salmon.

  • At spot D, right of Kate and then just in front of the jetty, the Orange Salmon swims ...

If you want you can first try whether the polar bear likes a blue, green or purple fish. Then first catch a blue, green or purple fish. You can do that with each of the 9 "bait flies" from the chest. Then catch a blue, green or purple fish. Kate automatically stores the fish in the basket.

Then go back into the house through the back door. Back in the house you click again on the window, next to the front door. You then look through the window again and see the polar bear again. Take the fish from your inventory and then click on the polar bear and ...... The polar bear sniffed the fish but don't eat the fish because it was not an Orange Fish. Katie then says that she is dealing with a polar bear that only lusts one type of fish

Now go and catch an Orange fish. So pick up the Fishing Rod again and click on the chest with the bait. Pick up the green Fly that is in the top right-hand corner of the chest. Then look in the River and find spot D and click there. Katie throws the rod out and catches an Orange Salmon and puts this fish in her basket. Go back into the Wooden House and to the window at the front. Pick up the Orange Salmon from your inventory and wait until the bear reappears and then click on the bear and ......

Kate throws the Orange Salmon through the window and ....... The polar takes the fish and goes away

Close the close-up and go outside through the front door. Move your cursor to the right, to where the bear was eating the fish. At that place you get the "grab hand".

So click the "grab hand" and Kate walks towards it and she grabs the Fish bone which the bear has left behind.

Part 2: Climb up the mountain.

Go, via lower left, a screen to the left and then, via the bottom of the screen, back to the gorge and the collapsed bridge. Kate has to go to the other side of the gap. But how? Walk to the edge of the hanging bridge.

Tarzan Kate:

Click on the left rope of the bridge ..... Kate tells you that she can not untie the rope with her bare hands. Select the Axe in inventory and then click on the left rope of the bridge and ........

Kate cuts off a large piece of the rope and in your inventory you now have the "Rope with Plate". Above the gorge you can see a very thick branch.

Take the "Rope with Plate" from your inventory and then click on that thick branch that hangs over the gap and .............

Kate swings like Tarzan to the other side and she calls to Youki to follow her. Youki does not need a rope. The animal just jumps to the other side, but only just made it

Go, via the bottom of the screen, further on the path to the next screen. On the next screen Youki runs away again.

Youki runs forward along the path and then disappears to the next screen. Follow Youki. We see Youki chasing a white dove.

Kate is standing on a path that is slowly rising. Now just click with your circle on the right side of the screen. Kate moves to the right and the screen moves whit her. Repeat this again and you will get the yellow arrow on the right side of the screen. Go to the next screen and ........

Cut Scene: Kate arrives at Youki. The animal is barking at a steep rock wall and he looks up. The camera pent up and we see the Bourgoff brothers on top of the steep cliff. They throw big boulders down with the intention to crush Kate. That's not nice. Youki runs to the right in panic and Kate shouts at the animal that he has to go back to the train. Then we see the Bourgoff brothers again who are preparing to throw down one last, large, lump of rock.  A plane with engine trouble appears in the air. The plane crashes.

Climbing up the rock wall:

Kate is standing in front of that steep rock wall and she has to go up. You see that this steep wall is full of crevices. Click on the mountain wall. Kate tells you that she can not even reach the bottom crack. Take the Ax out of your inventory again and then click on the rock wall again.

Kate hits the Ax in the bottom crack. Click on the Ax. ........... Kate is now climbing up a little bit via the ax. Kate has to climb all the way up, but she can't always go straight up. Kate will also have to go a few times to the right or to the left and then climb up a bit further. Kate climbs up when you click right above her head. Kate climbs to the left or to the right if you click left or right of Kate.

Click on the Ax in the rock. Kate climbs up a bit.

Click above Kate. Kate climbs up a bit again.

Click above Kate. Kate climbs a bit up again.

Now click 2x  right next to Kate  goes to the right twice.

Click again  4 times above Kate. Then click 4 times to the left of Kate to make her go 4 times to the left.

Then go straight up 2 times. Then you go right twice. Then go straight up 2 times.

You will now see the edge, above Kate.

Go right twice. And now you can climb further up.

When Kate climbs the last bit up and then almost above you see the Cirkos Cabaret and you hear the detective talking to Kate's boss and then Kate climes all the way up.

On the next screen, Kate has arrived at a crossroads where she can take 3 directions.

Bottom screen goes to a radar tower .... left side goes to the plane wreck .... Up goes to a viewpoint overlooking the stranded train.

Now first go down via the bottom of the screen and .......

Cut Scene  We see a radar tower and then ....... Kate is almost driven over by the snowmobile of the Bourgoff brothers.

Hans is sitting on the back of the snowmobile. The Bourgoff's race on and Kate follows them back to the crossroads and to the viewpoint. In the distance, Kate sees the train between the trees

Continue walking until the end of the path. Kate is on the edge and says she has to find a faster way to get back at the train.

Part 3: How to get to a train on time:

A: Pilot Wake Up

Go back to the screen with the radar tower via 2 times  bottom of the screen.

Radar Tower 1st time:

Walk to the Radar Tower. To the left of the radar tower is an open shed and you can see that a ladder goes up in the tower. Click with your cursor in the shed. You enter the close-up screen and you will see all equipment on the shelves. There is a communication radio, a microphone and a radar screen. You can not do anything with it now, so close the close-up again. Now click on the ladder of the radar tower and .........

Kate climbs up and ends up on top of the tower. You are now in the close-up of the Tower's Rotary Mechanism.

The tower can  be turned to the North, the East, the South and the West. Do not do this yet .......

So stay away from the handle and close the close-up. Kate automatically climbs down again and then stands on the ground again.

Plane wreck

Now go back 2 screens via 2 times the bottom of the screen. Kate is back at the crossroads. Now go, via middle left, a screen to the left. You will then see some wreckage from the crashed plane. Continue forward. Kate is then between the wrecked pieces. You see the pilot hanging straight ahead. The pilot hangs on the ropes of his parachute in a bare tree. Continue forward one screen. Kate is then wrecked at the front part of the plane. You see the cockpit

Go, via the middle up, 1 screen ahead and Kate is at the pilot. Click on the pilot in the tree.

The crazy guy is just sleeping and no matter how Kate tries, she can't wake up the guy. The guy has his headphones on his ears and he does not hear Kate. Kate will have to find a way to wake him up. Would the radio still work in the plane wreck? Go back to the plane wreck via the bottom of the screen. Now click on the cockpit. You enter the cockpit panel close-up screen. First look at the name that is written at the top of the panel .......... Boris Charov is written there .... .this pilot in the tree is Kate's old, and totally deranged, friend Boris from Komkolzgrad (Syberia part 1). Would Boris ever reach the moon when Kate launched him in his rocket? In any case, he is now back on Earth ....... well, almost back.......

Check the instrument panel. At the top left is the On / off button and on the right side you see two switches with an A and a B. There is a light next to each of these two switches. The A switch has a YELLOW light and the B switch has a GREEN light. The panel on the right has the Speaker. Under the speaker you see 3 colored toggle switches 1, 2 and 3. Switch 1 is YELLOW, switch 2 is RED and switch 3 is GREEN. Below these 3 colored toggle switches you can see a green light (4) with two small metal switches (5 and 6) and below you can see two rotary switches C and D. At the top right is the numerical display E. At the far left you see valve F .. Kate must figure out the radio frequency to make contact Boris in the tree, via the radio and his headphones.

 Do the following:

Click the On / Off switch. The red light goes on and also the Yellow and Green lights of the A and B switches goes on. These A and B switches are separate groups. First we will determine, with GROUP A, the YELLOW group, the first 2 digits of the frequency.

Click on Switch B to switch off the GREEN GROUP. The green light is now off, but the yellow light, of switch A, is still burning. Make sure the switches 1 and 2 are up and switch 3 is down. Also make sure that the switches 4 and 5 are up. Then click the rotary switch C to the left. The green light 4, under the switch 1 will illuminate ...... Digit display E will switch on and you will now see the numbers: 03.

Now we will do the same with the GREEN group, so with the B group. Switch off the YELLOW group by clicking switch A. Turn on GREEN by clicking switch B. Now set YELLOW switch 1 down. Raise the RED switch 2 and the GREEN switch 3. Turn the switches 4 and 6 up ....... In the digit display E the last 2 digits of the frequency will appear and they are the digits: 28

The whole frequency thus is :0328.

The radio of the plane went bust during the "emergency landing" of Boris. But isn't there a radio in the shed near the radar tower? Close the close-up. Kate is standing next to the plane wreck. Go, via 2 times bottom right, bottom left, bottom screen, back to the:

 Radar Tower: second time:

Walk to the tower and click again in the shed. You will enter the close-up screen again. The radio is on the top shelf and the microphone is on the left. On the right is the Radar coordination screen, but you do not need that now. Click the red button on the radio. The radio turns on and the number display lights up. On the left of the radio you see 8 red buttons.

Number the 8 red buttons, from top left to bottom right as, 1 to 8 and then click:

  • 3 times button 2.
  • 2 times button 3
  • 8 times button 4.

The number display shows the frequency 0328. Click the red Button on the bottom of the microphone and ......

Kate screams a "Wake-Up Call" through the microphone and Boris wakes up. On the advice of Kate, Boris cuts  the ropes of his parachute and ... Boris falls down on the ground.

B: Shoot Kate to the Train

Plane wreck

Go via the bottom right back to the clearing and then via middle left to the plane wreck back. Walk via 2 screens to the cockpit part of the wreck. Boris, the pilot, is engaged in some work on the wreck. Click on Boris. Your conversation topics appear. The main topic here is the "Train" topic. So first use the other topics and then the "Train" topic. Through the "train" topic you get the "Flying Wing" topic again. Use this. Boris then makes the suggestion to use the airplane's ejection seat to go to the train. But Boris also says that the whole system is wrecked, so Kate will have to manually "fire" the ejector chair.

After this conversation you click again in the cockpit to be back in the close-up of the instrument panel. Panel F is now also activated and on top of that you seethe  two icons of the cockpit seats. Below that  you see two sets of 2 number displays and below each of the 4 number boxes you see an arrow key. Below the arrow keys you see a thick button. Use the arrow keys to enter a number on the 4 displays. Now enter a random 2-digit number in the two left numeric boxes with the upper left arrow keys. Then press the thick button.

Boris tells Kate that if she uses these coordinates she will crash with the ejection chair against the wall of the cliff. Close the close-up screen and click on Boris again.

Use the "Mission" topic. Kate asks Boris for help with the ejector seat. Boris says that Kate has to now the coordinates of the area where the train is. Unfortunately, she can not use the radar of the plane for that, so Kate must  use the Radar Tower to figure out the coördinates of the train. So go back to the radar tower Radar Tower:

Radar Tower:  third time

Click again in the shed. You will enter the close-up screen again. Now take a good look at the radar screen. The red on / off button is located at the bottom right of the screen. Click the on / off button and the screen is then activated. A circle that divides into 4 segments appears on the radar screen.

At this moment the upper left segment is active, because the radar dish, on top of the tower, is aimed at that area. No "Blip" appears in that segment, so that is not the area where the train is located. Close the close-up and click again on the tower's ladder. Kate climbs up again and she comes back into the close-up of the tower's rotation mechanism. Look at it. There is a pointer on the mechanism and you see a scale on the points. Think of the whole think as a clock.

The pointer is now at "9 o'clock". You see a "C" at "12 o'clock". The LEVER of the pointer is now at "3 o'clock". Now click once on the LEVER of the pointer. You see the dish rotating a turn and then you see that the pointer is at "12 o'clock" while the Lever is at "6 o'clock". Click the LEVER of the pointer again. Once again, the dish rotates a turn and the  pointer is then on the "B" at "3 o'clock". That's it.

Close the close-up and Kate automatically climbs down again. Click again in the shed. You will return to the close-up screen. The right-hand segment of the circle is now active on the radar screen. The radar dish is now focused on this area. Look at the moving line in this segment. A "BLEEP POINT" appears in the segment. That's the train. Now find the intersection of the X-axis with the Y-axis on which you see the "Bleep".

Around the circle you see scale and this runs from 0 to 100 with gaps of 10. The coordinates of the train is therefore: 8020.

Close the close-up and go back to the cockpit of the plane. Click again in the cockpit and in the close-up screen you now use the arrow buttons to set 8020 on the digit display.

Press the thick button and ...... "BANG ON TARGET" calls Boris happy and then ....

Cut Scene: Kate shoots up as a rocket in the  ejection chair  and ...........

Kate then descends on the parachute and lands at the Train where she is warmly welcomed by a happy Youki.

Part 4: Back at the Train:

Finally Kate is back at the train. Go, via the left arrow on the locomotive, to the locomotive.

Kate walks on to the locomotive and receives a call from Colonel Emiliov who tells that detective Cantin asked annoying questions about Kate. Kate asks if the Colonel Cantin can "slow down" a bit. The Colonel wants to do this. While Kate is having this phone conversation, you see Youki rooting in the snow. The beast uncovers an ARM and you see the Arm in the snow.

Click on the Arm that now rises up from the snow and .......

Kate pulls a frozen Oscar out of the snow. Oscar does not look happy at all.

Defrost  Oscar:

Talk to Oscar. Oscar is not quite right, Oscar is frozen a bit. The cold has slightly paralyzed his mechanism. Nevertheless, you get talk options. Use them all and you find out what happens to Oscar is the last hours. Katie currently does not expect much help from Oscar. Once you have used all the conversation topics, the conversation ends automatically.

Go, via bottom right, a screen to the right and then click on the front balcony of the train car. Enter the car and walk to the middle compartment. What a mess ........... The round pillar, which was always in the middle of the compartment, has fallen over and in the floor you now see a round Metal Plate. Click on the round metal plate ......... Kate tells you that it is a panel.

Enter the sleeping compartment. There is something on the floor, in front of Hans bed. Pick it up. It is the Train Blueprint and this appears magnified in your screen. Well, I'm not technical at all, so a blueprint does not tell me anything at all. Close the close-up and go, via the bottom of the screen,  to the workbench of Hans.....Also a mess. There is no more workbench. Do you see the large panel now standing on its side against the rear? At the middle of this panel there is an Oil can on the floor. Move your cursor over the floor until you get the "grab hand". Then click to take that  Oil Can.

Go back through the train car and out on to the front balcony and return to the locomotive. Continue to Oscar. Take the Oil Can from your inventory and click on Oscar.......Oscar likes it.....

Kate smears Oscar with oil and Oscar becomes his old, humorous, self again. Oscar is ready to bring the train back on steam and he tells Kate that she has to take a seat in the car again. Oscar climbs onto locomotive again. So go back to the train car, via the bottom right,  and enter the train car again. As soon as you have returned to the wagon, you will see an overview of the train. There is no movement. The locomotive doesn't want to move.

Disconnect the train car:

Leave the car again and return to the locomotive. Click on the locomotive's ladder and Kate climbs in and ends up at Oscar. Talk to Oscar.

Oscar says that it isn't the locomotive that is broken, but that the passenger car has broken down. The locomotive can no longer pull the train car. The only possibility is to disconnect the car. Kate has to find the Disconnection Mechanism, that is somewhere in the train car. When Kate has found that mechanism she has to call Oscar and he will, from the locomotive, open the panel so Kate can activate the mechanism.

Leave the locomotive and go back to the middle compartment of the train car. Click again on the round Metal Plate. Yes, this is the panel that houses the disconnection mechanism. Kate says that the plate must be open. So call Oscar via Kate's cell phone in your inventory.

Kate tells Oscar that she is in position and Oscar opens the round panel. Click again on the, now opened, round Metal Plate. You come into the close-up of the decoupling mechanism. You see 5 round iron bars and at each bar you see a diamond-shaped slide. You can click each of the 5 diamond-shaped sliders to the right. All 5  bars must come loose.

Number the 5 diamond-shaped sliders, from top to bottom, as 1 to 5. Click on sliders 1, 3 and 5

The sequence does not matter, so you can also click 5, 1, 3 or 3, 5, 1 . The 5 bars then release all 5 and .....

Final cut scene: The train car is disconnected from the locomotive and  begins to plunge back down into the deep abyss. Oscar brings the locomotive on steam. Kate runs for her life through the sliding train car and ..... manages just in time to jump over to the locomotive and the locomotive rushes over the rails. Then we are again with that annoying detective. Cantin knows about the collapse of the railway bridge and he informs Kate's boss that in his opinion Kate Walker is dead. The train arrives at the end of the Rails. Kate and Youki get out and we see Youki run away  to a village. We then are in:
