Chapter 4: Forgotten Bounds:

Samuel is back in his own castle and has a conversation with Victoria and Bates in the great hall. 

Robert has not returned from Ashburry, while a nurse from the sanatorium has stated that she did see Robert leave. 

The dead body of a boy was found in the woods, according to Inspector Collier, the boy was killed by wolves.

Travel, via your map, to  Willow Creek. Walk on to the pub and enter the pub

Harry, the bartender, here starts talking to Samuel about that "poor boy" who was ripped to pieces by a cloud. The gravedigger is also back, or still, knocking back his beers. Talk to the gravedigger about "Vick". Gravedigger thus tells that Vick is dead and his body was found in the "Stonering". 

So open your map. The Stonering location and the "Old Mine"  are now also available at the bottom left of your map.

 Click on the Stonering location to go there  now.

Stonering:

Black screen while Samuel is on route to the stonering. Samuel arrives at this place. Inspector Collier is also here and welcomes Samuel, asking what he is doing here. Your masks appear. Give the inspector a "Positive" answer. Collier is convinced that Vick was killed by a wolf, even though Samuel points out that there is only blood on the "altar" and not on the ground around the altar. Give Collier another "Positive" answer when your masks reappear.

 Then ask Collier about "Henry". Collier says Dr. Hermann has determined that Henry could not have died by drowning or asphyxiation because no water was found in Henry's lungs. Collier is now convinced that Henry died in a different place than where he was found and he now considers Henry's case a homicide. Give another "Positive" answer. Then end the conversation.

Examine the screen. So you are standing in an open space in the dark and lurid forest. In the center is the Altar, drenched in Vick's blood. Behind Samuel is a "Big Tree". To the left of this tree is a stone "Menhir". Also on the left of the screen is a "Menhir" and on the right is another one. The "Wind Chime" hangs in the Big Tree. In front of the Menhir on the left of the screen, you will find a "Plant" and right, behind Collier, is a "Stone" on the ground.

Click on the "Altar with bloodstains". Note that you can keep clicking on the altar. Click on the "Big Tree". Samuel says that the plant in front of it seems to have been burned. Click on the "Wind Chime". Click on the "Menhir" left next to the big tree. You come into the close-up. There is a red Symbol on this Menhir. Take William's diary from your inventory and click it on the red symbol. 

Samuel draws the Symbol in the diary. You can check this by right-clicking on the diary in your inventory and then scrolling to the last page. 

Close all close-ups. Then note that you can keep clicking on this Menhir and that you will always return to the close-up of it. Click on the "Menhir" on the left side of the screen. Samuel tells you that this is 1 of the 3 Menhirs that are in a triangle around the altar. Left click on the "Plant" in front of this menhir and then right click on the plant

Samuel says there is "something" between the leaves of the plant. It's a small piece of fabric. Click on the plant again, but Samuel does not want to take the piece of cloth, not while Collier is watching him. Click on the "Menhir" on the right side of your screen. Then click on the "Stone" behind Collier. Open your inventory and take out the bottle of "Blood" and click it on the stone

Samuel pours the blood over the stone and hints at your next step. 

Talk to Collier. Use the "Symbol on the Menhir" topic first, then give Collier a "Positive" answer when your masks appear. 

Collier does not put much importance to the symbol. Then use the "Blood" topic. 

Samuel points out the blood on the stone to Collier. Collier turns and stands looking at the blood stained stone

As soon as you get your arrow cursor back, left click / right click on the "Plant" again. 

Samuel now fishes out  a "Handkerchief" from among the leaves and tells you that the Gordon Emblem is embroidered on the handkerchief. 

Open the map and go to:

The House of Dr. Hermann:

Click on the doorbell and you will enter the hall again. So go through the gate to the morgue. 

Hermann is handling Vick's corpse and welcomes you and then your options appear. 

So talk to Hermann about "Vick". Hermann says that Vick couldn't possibly have been killed by a wolf, or any other animal. Vick died of severe blood loss and severe damage to his internal organs. Hermann also found no animal teeth prints anywhere. Continue asking about "Robert" and then about "Henry". 

Then travel, via your map, back to your:

Castle:

Samuel now arrive at the front gate of the castle grounds.  Click the mailbox that's on the left pillar of the gate. 

There's a letter in the mailbox and Samuel takes the letter. It's a letter from James to his father William

Samuel can't enter the castle here, so open up your map and click on the castle location again and now Samuel ends up in the main hall of the castle. Immediately go back outside through the front door and then go to the Stable. Enter the stable and talk to Morris who is still working at the workbench. Talk to Morris about "Vick". However, Morris does not have much to say. The only thing he manages to bring up is a comment about the "strange things that have been happening here lately".  Go back to the castle and then go through the dining room to the kitchen. In the kitchen, talk to Bates about "Victoria". Victoria is in her room. So back to the large hall and then up the stairs and then through the gate to the hallway. Click on Victoria's door. Victoria opens. 

Talk to Victoria about "Robert" and about "James". Victoria wants Samuel to go to Ashburry, to the Sanatorium, to investigate what happened to Robert. She now tells that James is William's illegitimate son and that he is crazy. After this conversation, open the map. So now a new location has been added and that is the "Ashburry Sanatorium". 

Travel to the:.

The Ashbury Sanatorium:

Black screen while Samuel is on his way. Then Samuel stands in front of the gate of the sanatorium. 

The left part of the gate is a door, but it's locked. On the left side of the gate you will find the doorbell on the stone pedestal.

 Click on the doorbell. Samuel rings the doorbell and we hear the nurse. After some insistence, Samuel is allowed to enter.

Lobby

Youare then in the Lobby of the sanatorium. A conversation with the nurse, who's behind the counter follows. 

Robert is gone, so he left the sanitarium. Ask the nurse about your Old Photo. James has escaped from the sanitarium the day before yesterday. Probably through the sewer. Listen to what the nurse says. After this conversation, examine the screen for a moment. In the center of the hall is a Fountain. Click on the fountain. It contains clean clear water. Note that you can keep clicking on the fountain. To the left of the reception desk is a gate with a fence. Click here. It is the entrance to the cells, but Samuel is not allowed through. On the right side of the screen are the two large windows and the exit. In front of the left window you will find a Waste Bin but it has nothing of interest for you. Leave the hall through the exit next to the windows.

You are outside again at the front of the large building and it's raining. You can go back into the hall through the gate. Bottom right is the exit to the main gate. At the bottom center of the screen you will find a sewer pit. Click this. You can't do anything else with it. Then click with your arrow on the far left side of your screen. Samuel walks to the left and the screen continues to scroll. You will then come to the left corner of the building and there you will get the exit "Go around the building". Take this exit and you will arrive at the

Backside:

Examine the screen again. You see a low roof. On that roof lies a Hammer. Under the roof stand a waste bin. If we look further to the left, you will see a steel door. To the left of the door is a crate with bottles. Next to the door is a small window. Then there is a bucket  that stand infront of aand this bucket represents a heap of coal. Bottom left is the exit to the cemetery. At the bottom right is a Garbage Dump.

Click on the hammer that is left on the roof of the shed. The hammer disappears to your inventory. Click 2x on the Waste bin, which is under the roof. At the first time Samuel says that there is only rubbish in it, but at the second time Samuel takes a syringef rom the waste.  Although the syringe is dirty, it is intact. Click on the steel door. Samuel walks to the door and knocks. Behind this door is the Boiler cellar and the Stoker opens the door.

After the introductory conversation, which shows that the stoker is quite a grumpy guy, your conversation options appear. So talk to the stoker about the "Boiler room", "Robert" and about "Escape". During this conversation, your "Masks" will appear a few times. Then always give a "Positive" answer, but if the stoker asks if you are an "Inspector" then you give a "Negative" answer. To his next question you give a "Positive" answer again.After the conversation with the stoker, click on the bottles. They are beer bottles, note that you can keep clicking on it. Click on the small window.

Samuel bends over and peers through the barred window. You come into the close-up.

You  peek into the boiler room through the barred window. The window has 3 steel rods and you see a machine. Click on the Machine. Samuel tells you that this is a kind of Thermostat. Click on the Thermostat. Note that you can keep clicking on it. Click on the center rod. This rod appears to be loose. Click it again. Samuel can't get the rod loose and he says he has to get the stone loose underneath. So click on the brick, under the center rod but course you can't get it out. Close close up.

You can click on the bucket, the coal and on the garbage dump, but that will not get you anything. Go, via the bottom left, to the cementry. There is nothing to do on the first cemetery screen, so go straight to the next screen, via the exit in the middle right. 

You can click on botth crypts and also on the Monument that is in the middle. Go back to the "Middle Part of the Cemetery" and then further back to the back of the sanatorium.Click on the steel door again and talk to the stoker again. Talk about "beer" and about the "Cemetery". During the cemetery topic you must give a "positive" answer again. 

After this conversation, go back to the front via the middle right and go back into the lobby through the gate.

Lobby

Talk to thenurse again. First ask her about the Cemetery and then use the Telephone topic. 

Samuel is not allowed to call hishome himself, but the nurse is willing to do so. The nurse disappears to make the call. 

Behind the counter, on the left, is a cupboard and in front of this cupboard are the swingmdoors in the counter. 

Click on these swing doors and......

...... you will end up in the close-up of the cupboard. On the cabinet stand vase and a bottle. There is a keyhole in the right cupboard door. 

Click on the keyhole. You need a key. Click on the bottle and click on the vase

Samuel picks up the vase and puts it in your inventory. Open your inventory and then right click on the vase. There is a slot in the bottom of the vase. Scroll through your inventory to the left and then right click on your wallet. You take out a coin. Scroll back to the right, pick up the coin and click it on the Vase. You take a little key from the vase, take this key and click it on the keyhole of the right cabinet door. 

You automatically leave the close-up for a moment and see Samuel open the cupboard. You are then back in the close-up. In the right part of the cupboard you will find a medicine 4 times. 2 on the top shelf and 2 on the bottom shelf. Click on each of these 4 drugs. Samuel will pick up one of the white bottles and take it with him. That's a bottle of "Amobarbital", a fast-acting sedative. Once you have this, close the close-up. The nurse now comes back and a short conversation follows. Go back outside and back to the back of the building.

Backside:

Walk to the crate with beer bottles. Open your inventory and click the Syringe on the bottle Amobarbital.

 You fill the syringe with the stuff. Take the full syringe from your inventory and click it on the beer bottles

Samuel squirt the anesthetic into the bottles. Go back to the front and go back inside to the Lobby.

Take the Handkerchief from your inventory and click it on the Fountain. 

Samuel soaks the handkerchief. Go back outside and to the back and click on the small window again.

You are back in the close-up of the small window. Take the hammer from your inventory and place it on the brick beneath the middle rod but do not click yet. Wait until you hear the Stoker shoveling coals on the fire again and the stove starts burning brighter again. Then click 3 times with your hammer on the Brick. The Brick is then gone. NB: If you click on the stone with the hammer before you hear the scrape of the coal shovel, the stoker will notice that you are hitting the stone and he will come out. Then try again. When you have remove the brick click Click on the middle rod and you remove the rod. The rod goes to the inventory. 

Take the Wet Handkerchief from your inventory and click it on the Thermostat. 

The cold water from the wet handkerchief will make the thermostat burn harder and it will get even hotter in the basement. 

Close close up. The stoker will automatically open the door and take a bottle of beer from the crate and go back inside. 

You now need to give the anesthetic time to work, so go back and forth to the graveyard. 

Then come right back here and you will get the Exit cursor on the steel door. 

So click on the steel door and you will now enter the:

Boiler cellar:

Examine the screen. Stoker is snoring in his chair. On the left of the screen is a large coal heap.

Left click on the coal heap. You need to click at about the highest point of the heap. 

Samuel says that there's something hidden in the coales. Then right click on that samepoint of the Coal heap. Samuel picks up something lying among the coals. View this item in your inventory. It is the Body of a Doll.  Right click on this Doll Body to take a  Thread from it. Now go to the "Back part" via the exit on the stairs, left behind the stoker. 

Examine the screen again. In the left corner is a door. On the left side of the door is a panel. Further to the left you see a power box. Click on the door. Is locked but there is no lock and no door handle. Click on the panel. You enter a close-up of the Code box. So you will have to enter a certain code here to open that door. Close close up. There is a large table against the wall. On the wall, above this table, you will find the Intercom and the  Notice Board. Click on the  Notice Board. You come into the close-up.

Examine the  Notice Board closely.  In the middle of the board hangs a large Poster. On this poster you see a year 1918. Write down this year. At the bottom left of the board you will find a number of Pins. Click on these pins and Samuel picks up 1 pin. At the bottom right of the board hangs a Key. Grab this key. Close close up.

Now click on the Panel again, left of the door. You will return to the close-up of the code lock. There is a round opening at the top. Take the key that you just took from the  Notice Board from your inventory and click this key into the round opening. Then put in the year you read on the bulletin board. So press the numbers: 1, 9, 1, 8 and then press the lower right key. You will hear a sound and the green flame will light up and you will hear "Click".

 Close the close-up and click on the door. Samuel opens the door and we look into the cell corridor. 

There's a guy in a white coat sitting guard in the hallway and Samuel quickly goes back into the cellar. 

That white coat guy needs to be lured away first. 

Go back to the front part via the bottom center and then out of the basement via the bottom right.

Go back to the front and enter the lobby again. Talk to the nurse and use the "Duty roster" topic. 

Samuel receives the duty roster from the sister.  Back to the Boiler cellar and there to the "rear part".

 In your inventory, right-click on the duty roster 

Then take the duty roster from your inventory and click it on the Intercom, which is above the table on the wall. 

Dr. Smith is now called away from the cell corridor. Climb the door again and you end up in the:

Cells corridor:

Click in the middle of your screen, so right behind the pillar in front of the desk, to go to the go further into the corridor.

 Someone calls from a cell and Samuel walks to this cell door and your masks appear. Give a Positive" answer.

 In the cell is Ralph, a patient. Ralph is very sad. Bubby, his "boyfriend",  has disappeared and he won't help Samuel until he goes looking for Bubby. On the right is a Fountain. You can just click on it. There is a bench on the wall behind the fountain. There is a light switch on that wall. To the left of the couch is a Waste Bin. There is also a large window in the right wall with a gate in front of it. A cable runs from the Switch to the ceiling lamp. 

Click the switch. The lamp goes out. Click the switch again to turn the lamp back on. Left click and then right click on the Waste Bin...... Samuel takes a  Doll's Head from the bin. Combine in inventory the Thread with the Pin. Combine  the Doll's Head with the Doll'sl Body. Then combine the pin with thread with the Head and body of a doll and Samuel sews the head to the body. Take the doll from your inventory and click it on Ralph's door. 

Ralph is happy. He is a little too happy and now wants to be left alone to play with his Bubby for a while. Your masks appear. Now give Ralph a "Negative" answer. After Samuel's threat, Ralph says that James "lives" in the cell next to him, but that Dr. Smith has the keys to the cells.  Samuel now hears that Smith coming back. Click the Switch again to turn off the lamp. Then click on the Cable above the switch. Samuel pulls the cable loose and it is now on the floor. Now take the cable from the floor. 

Your cursor is now the cable. Click the cable on the fence of the window. Samuel ties the rope to the fence. 

Take the Jewelry box from your inventory and click it on the window fence as well.

 Samuel puts the jewelry box on the window sill and turns on the music box and flips the switch again. The window gate is now electric. Samuel takes shelter behind the pillar. Smith hears the music and walks to the window and gets a shock and falls unconscious on the floor. Samuel disconnect the jewel / music box and puts it back into his pockets.  Left click on Smith. Then right click on the doctor and you have his keys. 

Take the Keys to the cells from your inventory and click with it on James's cell door and you will enter automatically.

in the Cell of James:

Examine the cell. To the left of the door is the Toilet and at the top of the wall is a large glass pot in the niche. You don't have to click on it. Against the left wall is a table and on this wall areDrawings. To the left of the table stand  an easel on which there is also a Drawing. Click on the drawings on the wall. Click on the drawing on the easel and.......in a cut scene you see that it is  a picture of a ruin and Samuel takes the picture. On the right wall hangs the bunk bed and on this wall are Papers. Click on the papers. There is ahole in the mattress of the bed. Left click and then right clickon the Hole in the Mattress. Samuel finds The Diary of James in the mattress. The Diary is being read, so listen carefully. 

When the reading is over, close the close-up and …….Dr. Smith is apparently awake again and he now locks Samuel in the cell. 

Examine the Drawings on the left wall again. Then left click and right click the lower left drawing ...

the lower left drawing is a "Drawing of an Eye" and Samuel pulls it off the wall and looks through the hole in the wall into Ralph's cell. 

A conversation with Ralph follows through this wall hole. Ask Ralph about "James" and about the "Head Doctor" and about "Escape". James was very afraid of the "Head Doctor". So that's Robert. Robert seems to have a habit of visiting his patients at night and injecting them with drugs or something. Via the "Escape" topic you give Ralph a "Positive" answer and then he tells you about the "Hole under James's Bed". 

When the conversation has come to an end, click on the point of the bed at the bottom of your screen . 

You will get the exit "Get under the bed" there. Click and Samuel crawls into the hole under the bed. 

You get a black screen for a moment and then Samuel pops up at the front of the building, through the sewer, well and Samuel automatically travels back to his:

Castle:

Of course you will arrive in the main hall again. Go through the dining room to the kitchen.

 In the kitchen, talk to Bates again. You get the "Lighthouse" subject. 

You saw the ruin of the lighthouse on that picture that was on the easel in James' cell. 

Use the "Lighthouse" topic and Bates tells Samuel where that old lighthouse is. 

Open your map. Bottom right on the map is now the lighthouse available, it is the "Sharp Edge" location, 

Click the "Sharp Edge" location to travel there.

Sharp Edge / Old Lighthouse

Immediately upon arrival i advice you to save the game. Samuel runs the risk of dying here if you react too slowly in a minute. Before you do anything here, dive into your inventory and check whether the small knife is sticking out of your black rook chess piece. If not, right click on your black tower piece to release the blade. You'll need the blade quickly in a moment.

Samuel stands in front of the ruins of the lighthouse. The large hole in the narrow facade is the entrance. Click on the entrance. 

However, Samuel says that he prefers to look around first. There is a window in the side wall. Click on the window. Someone is here because there is a fire burning in the ruin. So it could be James?. You can click on the Cans"in the tree in front of the window. To the left of the ruin is the exit "go to the lighthouse". Click this exit. 

Samuel walks off the screen and ...... is knocked down. Black screen. Then we see Samuel lying on the floor, his hands tied. James is busy digging Samuel's grave. James wants to bury Samuel alive. As soon as you get the cursor again, take the small knife from your inventory and click on Samuel with it. Samuel cuts the rope around his hands. Quickly, dive into your inventory again and now take out the Jewel box and click it on James

Samuel turns on the music from the jewelry box and James comes to his senses.

 We are then back in front of the ruins and a long conversation follows between Samuel and James. 

Listen carefully to what James says. Your conversation options will then appear.

 Ask James about "William", "Robert" and about the "Key". So according to Robert, the villain of the bacon. According to James, Robert has imprisoned James in the sanitarium and has been conducting experiments on his patients there for years. James has hidden the "3rd Sacred Key" in the sewers below the castle's basement. 

After this conversation you travel back to the castle via the map.

Castle:

Go to the kitchen. Bates isn't here anymore. Click on the Keys hanging to the right of the cellar door.

 Samuel takes the cellar key from the hook. So take the Key to the cellar from your inventory and click it on the cellar door. 

Samuel opens the cellar door. Click in the door and you will return to the:

Cellar:

Look at the bottom center of your screen. There's a Sewer grate in the floor there.....name it sewer 1.  Note that you can keep clicking on it. Walk a little to the right. Look at the large well. There is a Rope with Hooks hanging from the well. Click on it and the Rope and Hook will disappear to your inventory. Continue to the right. To the right of the well is a 2nd Sewer grate in the floor, behind the grinder. Also click on this grate A horrible stench comes out. Now click in the big gate to go "to the back part". Also in the rear part is a 3rd Sewer grate in the floor. Also click on this grate. There is also a terrible stench here.

Samuel now has to find out through which of the 3 sewer grates he can go down into the sewrs. So he has to find out under which grate  there is no WATER. Open your inventory. You probably now have 1 coin in your inventory. If that is not the case, you first have to right-click on your wallet to take a coin out. Take the Coin from your inventory and click the coin on the 3rd Sewer grate

Samuel throws the coin down through the grate and you then know that there is water under this 3rd grate. Go back to the 1st grate, at the front of the cellar. Throw a coin down here as well (if you don't have a loose coin, first right-click on your wallet again). This coin also ends up in water. Now throw a coin through the 2e grate to the right of the well, so the grate behind the grinder. There is no water under this grate and now you can go down through this grate. 

So click with your Exit Cursor on this sewer grid and you end up in the:

Sewers:

There is a Fountain. Right in front of the fountain lies a Cog wheel on the floor. Click on the fountain. Do this a few times. Note that you can keep clicking on the fountain. Then click on the Cogwheel. Samuel picks up the cogwheel. Click with your cursor on the right side of your screen. Samuel walks to the right and ends up at the right wall. There is a Mechanism in the wall. Click on the Mechanism

The mechanism activates the pumps, but no matter how Samuel turns the Red Wheel, it does not move. Above the red wheel you see a Cogwheel. However, there should be 3 Cogwheels. Now go deeper into the sewer via the exit on the right next to the fountain. You enter the:

Rear Sewer Basin Area:

Examine the screen.

To the left of the large gate through which you entered is an arched railing. To the right you see a thick round pillar in the corner. In this pillar you see an Opening. Click on the opening in the pillar. You have to put something in there. Click on the railng. There is a loose rod in the railing and Samuel takes out this loose bar. Take the rod from your inventory and click it on the opening in the pillar. 

However, the rod is too thick. Further to the right you see a Wheel in the middle wall niche. Click on this Wheel

However, the wheel is secured with a chain and a padlock and cannot be moved. 

Diagonally below this wheel you will see a round hatch, in the wall of the "quay", just above the filthy, smelly water. Click on that. It's the sewer inlet. At the very bottom right, a Cogwheel floats in the stinking sludge. Click on the Cogwheel. Samuel continues to the right, wondering how to fish this cogwheel out of the stinking mess. In your inventory you now click the Hook on the Rope and you then have a Rope with Hook. Take this from your inventory and click it on the cogwheel floating in the gunk. 

Unfortunately, the rope is too slack to fish up the cogwheel with it. Now go back through the gate to the fountain and then walk to the left side of the screen. Then, via the exit on the stone stairs, go back up to the basement. When you return to the top of the cellar, you are standing in front of that grinding machine. Take the rod from your inventory and click it on the grinding machine. Samuel sharpens it with a point. 

Go back into the sewer through the sewer grate. 

Go back to the back room, via the exit on the right next to the fountain. 

Click again with the rod on the Opening in the round pillar.

 Now the rod fits in and Samuel uses the bar as a lever and this opens that round hatch in the quay wall. Samuel puts the rod back in his pocket. Now go back to the Wheel. Enter your inventory and scroll through your items to the Acid bottle. Take the Acid from your inventory and click it on the Wheel. The acid burns through the padlock and chains. Click on the Wheel.

Samuel turns the wheel and ..... Rumbling, rumbling, rumbling and after a few moments the water flows through the round opening into the basin and fills it almost to the brim. Black screen. Then Samuel is again on the left in front of the gate and below him that cog wheel now floats in the basin. Take your Rope/Hook combination from your inventory again and click it on that Cogwheel again. No, this still doesn't work. In your inventory you now click the Rope / Hook on the Rod and you have a fishing rod. Now click with the fishing rod on the Cogwheel again and now Samuel fishes the Cogwheel out of the basin

Go back to the fountain and to the Mechanism in the right wall. 

Take, one by one, the two cogwheels from your inventory and then click them on the Mechanism

Samuel places the cogwheels in the right place. Then click on the red wheel  again.

Samuel now turns the red wheel and the Mechanism comes into operation. Go back to the back sewer basin room.

The 3rd Sacred Key:

The basin has now been pumped empty. Click on the stairs to go down to the bottom of the basin.

Next to the stairs, there is a "Dark Corner". On the wall you see a "Stone Relief". Click on this Stone Relief. You come into the close-up. I think this is a puzzle that you will have to solve later because at the moment you can't do anything with it. Close close up. At the bottom of the stairs is a "Little Chest". It's James' box. Click on the "Little Chest"

Samuel puts it in his pocket. So dive into your inventory and then right click on the "Small Chest" and you will have the "3rd Sacred Key".

Samuel gets a headache and becomes unwell from the stench. He takes a pill and goes to rest in his room in the castle. We end up in:

Chapter 5: True Confessions:
