Chapter 5: The Mechanical Age:

The Fortress:

. You have landed on a "Gear island". Turn around. You stand at a metal "bridge" and you look at the fortress

Left next of the "bridge" stand a "gear pillar" and on the right side are a few rusty cogwheels.

The "bridge doesn't go to the fortress but ends at a metal plate. Zoom in on the little "gear pillar" to see what's on top of it. On top of this "gear pillar" are 4 tumblers with 4 yellow buttons. By pushing the yellow buttons you can chance the symbols in each of the tumblers. On each tumbler you can set 10 different symbols

If you set the 4 correct symbols on these 4 tumblers than the metal plate will go open to reveal the Myst Linking Book that can bring you back to the Myst island.  So you must find out what those correct 4 symbols are. So in this Age you should not only look for the Red and Blue Pages, but also you must find the "Return Code" that you have to fill in on the 4 tumblers to go back to the Myst Island.  Zoom out and no go stand at the bridge that goes to the Fortress

The Fortress is the main building of this age and it is build like a hexagon. You see that the Fortress is build on a metal ring construction and so you suspect that the fortress can be turned around. Around the Fortress are 3 little islands. Those 3 islands are on 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock of the fortress. You have landed on the 6 o'clock island and you look at the Fortress with on the right side the 3 o'clock island. The 12 o'clock island is now at the back side of the fortress

Go forward over the bridge and enter the fortress.  You are then in the corridor of the Fort.

The corridor goes around through the fortress and will bring you into the Throne Rooms of Sirrus and Achenar. You can follow the corridor left or right and it really doesn't matter witch way you do this because this corridor goes round. Lets go to the right through the corridor. So follow the corridor to the right and you will enter  Achenar's Throne Room

Achenar's Throne room:

The Blue Page:

Just stand still for a moment and look around. On the left wall stand Archenar's throne. There's a blue button on the throne. Left of the Throne stand the Fortress Rotation Simulation machine. Against the right wall is a small chest on a shelf. That chest has a crank and if you turn the crank a snake comes out the chest to give you a freight

Go to that machine that stand on the left side of the Throne and zoom in on it. This machine is the:

Fortress Rotation Simulator machine

This machine is the "Fortress Rotation Simulator". It is a holographic projector and a holographic projection of the fortress appears.

Click the machine and.....Now a circle appears. This circle is also the fortress and it has 4 little orange arrows and a larger orange arrow

The  little orange arrows are at "12 o'clock", at "3 o'clock", at "6 o'clock", and at "9 o'clock". The red arrow is the entrance to the fort and this is now on the "6 o'clock" arrow. The machine has 2 levers that you can click up and down again. With Lever A you can produce a sound and with Lever B you rotate the orange arrow around to position 3, 12, 9 and back to 6

You can raise the left lever and then release it to hear a sound. You can also raise the right lever, but if you release the lever then it falls down again .Okay, you have to do a simulation now and then pay attention to the sounds that you hear. You must now turn the entrance of the fort to each of the 4 little orange arrows. The entrance is now at "6 o'clock".

Step 1.

Raise the left lever and immediately pull it down again and release it.

You hear a "Cowbell " sound. Note this down.

So note down that when the entrance of the fortress is on 6 o'clock you hear a "Cowbell" sound.

Step 2.

Raise the left lever and release it so that the lever stays up. Then grab the right lever and raise it and hold it. The "Fortress" will turn.  Hold the right lever until the red arrow is near the  "3 o'clock" position, then release the lever.  The red arrow will remain on the 3 o'clock position. Pull left lever down and release it. You hear a "Exhaust" sound.

So note down that when the entrance is at the 3 o'clock position you hear a "Exhaust" sound

Step 3 and step 4:

Raise the left lever and release it. Raise and hold the right lever again until the red arrow is near the "12 o'clock" position and then release the right lever.  The red arrow comes to a standstill on the "12 o'clock" position. Pull the left lever down and release it. You hear a "Clink" sound.

Raise the left lever and release. Raise and hold the right lever until the red arrow is near the "9 o'clock" position and then release the right lever.  The Arrow comes to a halt at the "9 o'clock" position. Pull the left lever down and release. You hear a "Spin" sound.

You have learned that you should be able to rotate the entire Fortress 360 degrees. And that the fortress gives a "Cowbell" sound at 6 o'clock, a "Exhaust" sound at 3 o'clock, a "Clink" sound at 12 o'clock and a "Spin" sound at 9 o'clock.

Zoom out of this simulation machine and turn to that blue button that is on the Throne.

Now push that blue button and.......next of the simulation machine a secret panel in the wall slides open to reveal a secret room.

Enter the secret room. A large metal cage is in this secret room and you find that the Blue Page lies on one of the shelves of the rack here

Don't take the Blue Page with you now because you have to find the return code first.

Around the corner of the cage is a lever on the wall. If you put that lever up you see electricity going through the cage.

What a "nice" person that Achenar must be. Leave this secret room. When the entrance panel has closed again you press the button to open it up so you can leave.

Continue to follow the corridor to the Throne Room of Sirrus and notice the side corridor that goes to an elevator but don't go there yet

Sirrus's Room:

The Red Page:

Sirrus's room is more luxurious decorated than Achenar's room and even his throne is more elegant.

You can look at all the stuff here but you can't do anything with it.

On the right "arm" of the throne stand a chess game box. Open up the chess box to reveal a red button.

Click the red button in the chess box to open up the secret room here. Enter the Secret Room. In the secret room you find the Red Page on the chests.

On a low cabinet lies a note from Anchenar that you can read

The Elevator:

Do not take the Red Page now because we now must find the 4 symbols that makes up the return code to get back to the Myst island and to find those 4 symbols we must turn the entrance of this fortress to the 3 o'clock, the 12 o'clock  and back to the 6 o'clock island and this means that we must go up with the elevator. The elevator is round and you can walk around it but it is closed. On the wall of the main corridor is a red button. Push that red button to lower the floor of the side corridor and......

........Go down and you will be at the engine of the elevator and in front of an oval console on which you see a window and a button lever. Click on the console to zoom in on it. In the small window you can see 2 small circles. An outside circle and an inside circle. There is a little opening in both circles. The opening in the outer circle is set to "6 o'clock" and the opening in the inner circle is now about "12 o'clock". The inner circle is the elevator and the outer circle is the elevator room. You have to turn the elevator and  you'll do that with the lever Grab hold of the lever and push it up and hold the lever up. The inner circle will then turn............Hold the lever up until the opening in the inner circle is also at 6 o'clock and..... both the outer and the inner circles will then be red

The elevator is now turned and open, so go back up and click the red button on the wall again to raise the floor of the side corridor. Go to the elevator and enter it now

In the elevator you see the 3 elevator buttons on the left. The Down Arrow Button is to go down, the Up Arrow Button is to go up and the Bar Button, between both arrows, is to lower the elevator just a little bit. Click the Up Arrow Button and the elevator will bring you up. When the elevator has gone up and stopped again, you step out of the elevator and turn around. You then look back at the elevator. Look up and......

You look up and you see that there is something on top of the elevator

.How to get to the top of the elevator? Look down again and step back into the elevator and turn to the elevator buttons.  Now press the BAR Button, so press the button between the two Arrow Buttons. You hear a sound.....Don't hesitate but step quickly out of the elevator and turn around again to the elevator and see.............

......... the elevator drops a bit and the roof of the elevator is now at your height.

If you were to slow in leaving the elevator after pressing the BAR BUTTON then you'll have to do this again.

On top of the elevator stand a console with 2 levers. On the right is the red button to raise the elevator again.

Step on the elevator and zoom in on those 2 levers

With these 2 levers you can rotate the fortress entrance to the little islands that are on 3 o'clock and on 12 o'clock. You have practice this in Archenar's Throne room with the rotation simulator, but now you must to it for real

The intention is that you now turn the fortress to one of the islands where you can find a part of the returning code. You know that the entrance of the fort is now facing the "Gear Island", and that is on the  " 6 o'clock" position. You can check this by moving the left lever up and down. You'll hear the dull "Cowbell" sound.

You must turn the fortress now to the "12  o'clock " island So raise the left lever and then let go of it and then raise the right lever and hold it for a second of 5 or 6, and then let go.  You'll see the gears rotating in the "mirror" and then they come to a standstill. Then lower the left lever and you will hear a sound again. If that sound is the "Clink" sound then the fortress is turned with the entrance to the 12 o 'clock island

If you do not hear the "clink " sound then you have to do it again and repeat this until you hear the "clink" sound. Then go back an turn around and push the red call b button to raise the elevator

Step back in the elevator and press the Down Arrow Button. The elevator drops back down.

Exit the elevator and follow the corridor all the way back through one of the two rooms to the Entrance / Exit of the Fortress.

The Fortress is now turned and the "bridge" now connects the Fortress with a small rocky island.

Go to the little island On top of this island there is a round "gear" pillar. Zoom in on it

On this "gear" pillar you see the left half of the Return Code. Note down  these 2 symbols on a piece of paper or take a photo of it with your camera

Turn around and go back to the fortress and notice that you now also see the little island that's on 9 o'clock of the fortress. That's where you need to go to next

Go back into the Fortress  and back through the corridor to the elevator. Go up again with the elevator and when the elevator is up again, press the middle BAR BUTTON again and then step quickly out of the elevator again. The elevator will drop a bit down without you in it again. Go back onto the elevator to the 2 levers Raise the left lever and leave it up. Raise the right lever and hold it for a few seconds and then release it again.  Put the left lever back down and hopefully you will hear the "Exhaust" sound. If you do not hear the "Exhaust" sound then you do this again.

When you hear the "Exhaust" sound then you know that you have turned the entrance of the fortress to the 9 o'clock island. Then step back and push the call button to raise the elevator and step back in. Take the elevator down and go through the corridor to the entrance and see.....you can now go the 9 o'clock island

Go to the top of the rock island and zoom in on the "gear" pillar. You see the 2 symbols of the right part of the Return Code.

Draw over the 2 symbols or take a photo of them with your camera

Turn around. You see the fortress and the islands that are on 6 o'clock and on 12 o'clock

The entrance of the fortress must now be turned back to the "Gear Island" where you have landed in this age and that's the 6 o'clock island. You know that if you turn the fortress to that island you will here a "cowbell sound. So go back to the elevator and take it up again and click again on the middle BAR BUTTON and quickly get out of the elevator again. Go back onto the elevator to the 2 levers and make sure, with the levers, that you hear the dull "Cowbell " sound.

If so then you know that you have turned the entrance to the 6 o'clock island.

Bring the Red Page to Myst:

You can now either get the Red Page or the Blue Page from the room of Sirrus or from the room of Achenar. Go down again with the elevator and then exit the elevator. You can now choose whether you go left to Sirrus's room or right to Achenar's room. In this walkthrough I always  get the Red Page first, so go left through the corridor, to the room of Sirrus.  Open up the chess box that's on the throne again and then push the red button again to open up the secret room

Get in the secret room and now take the Red Page that's on the crates

Leave here and go to the entrance of the fortress to see that the entrance is now indeed facing the 6 o'clock island

So go onto the starting island and go to the pillar on where you now must set the correct 4 symbols. You have taken photo's of those 4 symbols, so open your photo album to look those 4 symbols up and then put them on the 4 tumblers by clicking the 4 yellow buttons. When you have done this click the top yellow button and.......

......the hatch will be lowered to reveal the Myst Linking Book, so go down to that book

Open the Myst Linking Book and click in the screen of the right hand the right page.

You return to the:

Myst Island

Library

Go the Red Book. The Red Page will be put next to the book, so click the red page to put it into the book  and then open the Red Book.  Listen patiently to the nagging of Sirrus. He needs 1 Red Page. Close the book. You have to decide for yourself whether you also want to get the Blue Page from the Fortress of the Mechanical Age. Of course I do.  If you want to do that too then go out of the library and go back to the Linking Book in the big Gear Wheel upon  the hill.

Via the linking book in the big gear return to the Mechanical Age and go back into the Fortress and into Achenar's room.

Use the blue button on the throne to open up the secret torture room of Achenar

Step into the "Torture room" and  grab the Blue Page from the rack

Go back to the arrival island. You don't have to open up the hatch to the Myst Linking book because that hatch will still be open. So go down to the Myst Linking book and link back to the Library of Myst Island. Go to the Blue Book and put the Blue page into to book and then open the book to listen to Achenar once again. When Achenar is done close the Blue Book and we continue with:

Myst Island: Open the Channel wood Age:

Library

To go to the Channel Wood Age you must get into the elevator tree, behind the boiler hut.

First zoom in on Tower Rotation map again. Turn the rotation knob until the red beam is on the elevator tree., at the boiler hut

Then go to the "tunnel painting" and click the handle of that painting again, to close off the library and to open the elevator tunnel again. Go to the elevator and take it up to the tower again. Step out the elevator and you will now be at the "Key" ladder. You can climb the ladder again to the "balcony" and then look through the slit to see that the tower is now indeed facing the elevator tree at the boiler hut. Then climb back down and go to the copper plate. The clue non the copper plate is now 7, 2, 4

Go back down with the elevator and in the library pull the handle of the "entrance painting" again to open up the library.

Leave the library and go to the Boiler Hut. Go to the tree that stands on the right side of the boiler hut to see that this tree is halfway up now

Boiler Hut and the Elevator Tree

Now enter the Boiler Hut. Inside the hut you see a wall save, the Boiler and a red turning wheel. There's no fire burning under the boiler because the ignition flame is out.

Zoom in on the wall safe. The save has 3 tumblers and 3 knobs. You must enter the correct number code in the tumblers and that is off course 7, 2, 4. You do this by turning the 3 knobs. When you have put 7, 2, 4 on the tumblers you click the handle of the safe to open up the safe. Inside the safe you then click the Ignition Button to ignite the little ignition flame beneath the boiler

Now turn to the boiler to see that the little ignition flame is now burning but you now must ignite the fire

Go to the red wheel and zoom in on it. Grab hold of the red wheel and now turn the wheel clockwise and keep doing this until the wheel locks.

The fire under the boiler will then burn.

Go out and go to the elevator tree to watch the tree with the opening come up again. Do not get into the tree while it comes up but wait until the tree is all the way up again.

Then go back into the boiler hut, zoom in on the red wheel again and now turn the wheel counter clockwise to put the fire under the boiler out again. The tree will start going down again so run back to the tree and wait for the opening in the tree is at your height and then quickly get into the tree. The tree takes you down to the cave

When the tree is all the way down step out and follow the wooden path to the pillar that stand in the middle of the cave

Zoom in on the Channel Wood Linking book that's on this pillar, open the book and click in the screen of the right hand page and.....

You will be zapped away to enter:
