Chapter 2: Jungle Island

From the Temple Island on Jungle Island. Turn left and get off the tram and walk 2 steps towards the rock.  

To the left is the entrance of a cave but first turn right. You see a wooden eye in the rock wall.  

Go forward to the Wooden Eye and click on this Wooden Eye. The Eye turns around and you hear a sound and see a Symbol on the back of the Eye.  

The sound you heard is the sound of a FROG and the symbol you saw is part of this sound. The symbol is a D'ni figure and you must learn and recognize these D'ni figures. 

So mark it and try to remember the sound in your memory. 

Turn 2 times left and then walk 2 steps forward into the cave. You are at the bottom of the stone staircase that goes all the way up through this cave.  

Climb up the stone stairs in 9 clicks and ...... you are up and out the cave again in a narrow steep gorge.  

The cave staircase thus leads to another staircase that goes up / down through the narrow gorge. We are now going down first. So click on this staircase on the left and you will look down on this path. Walk further down and while you do that you will see a part of the ocean and 2 dolphins lying sunbathing on a rock island.  

As you continue downhill, the 2 dolphins notice you and ..... they dive into the water and swim away, making their distinctive sounds. 

When you at the bottom of the gorge, click on the rock island. You then step off the path and arrive just in front of the rocky island, on the edge of the water. Turn right and then walk 3 steps ahead over the beach and then turn left. You now look back at that rocky island where the 2 dolphins were sunbathing and you now see that the rock island has the shape of a Wahrk. 

Click on the front of this rock, so on the "head" of the Wahrk and you will see another Wooden Eye. 

Click on the Wooden Eye to rotate it and make a note the symbol again and remember the sound.  

It is the Wahrk sound that you hear and this sound belongs to this D'ni number. 

Step, at the left edge of the screen, out of the close-up, turn left and then walk 2 steps back over the beach, then turn left again and ..... you look again at the staircase. Click on the path to get back on it. 

You are standing on the path that continues along the beach and in the distance you see that it is a staircase again. Follow the path to the left.  

Follow the path 4 clicks ahead and ....... You then went up through that staircase and then you are in front of the entrance of a tunnel.  

Go through the tunnel and you are on the other side of the tunnel.  

Before you see a wooden path and a watchtower. The guard in the watchtower will see you coming and he will blow Alarm. The wooden path ends at the watchtower, but there is a ladder to climb down. 

Walk to the end of the wooden path and then turn left and enjoy the view over the Lagoon.  

The ladder is at your feet, click on it to climb down. On the rock, on the other side, you can see a diving bell, but you cannot reach the diving bell from here. Look down ....... 

.......below you see a round stone pond. the pond does not contain water.

Now climb down the ladder to the stone pond. There is another wooden eye in the stone pond and a tap in the bottom right-hand corner.  

Click in the pond and you are at the wooden eye. Click on the Wooden Eye to see the thing in close-up again and then turn the Wooden Eye around. 

Again you hear a sound and again you see a symbol.  

The sound you hear is that of the Beetle. Draw the D'ni number symbol again and note that with this symbol the sound of the beetle is heard. 

Step out of the close-up and click on the tap that you see at the bottom right of your screen on the edge of the pond. 

The upper part of the pond now fills with water and you now see that this has the shape of a Beetle.  

Step out of the close-up and turn left. On top of the rock you can see the diving bell again and behind the pond you can see the ladder protrude.

Walk 2 steps forward and you will stand behind the stone pond and just in front of that ladder.  

Click on the top sport of the ladder and ...... You are now standing on the edge and looking down the ladder.  

Deep under you again see a wooden path. Climb down in 3 clicks and you will be down on the wooden path,

Follow the path, through the short tunnel, to the end and .... You are standing on a narrow metal platform with a metal ladder. 

This platform is mooring 1. On the other side of the Lagoon you see the "Throne" of Ghen. Look down and ..... well ......

This is mooring place 1 for the diving bell with which you will "sail" over the rails that lie at the bottom of the Lagoon. There are several mooring places. It is difficult to explain, but the inhabitants of Riven are able to create 'air holes' in the water and this is one of these "air holes. You must first ensure that the diving bell comes to this mooring place. Look up again and look around you, over the Lagoon. If you look to the left, see a wooden path that goes along the rocks over the water. You also see a part of the Village. If you look to the right you see a dome house .... that dome house is the School.

Turn around and walk back to the ladder through the tunnel. Climb back up to the Stone Pond via the ladder.  

Walk around the Stone Pond to the other ladder and climb back up to the upper wooden path.  

Follow the top path back, through the tunnel,  to the beach and walk on to the narrow gorge where the staircase path goes up. Okay, we're going all the way up now, so climb up this stairway again in 7 big steps. After 3 steps, the entrance of the cave tunnel to the tram is on the right, but you simply walk up. At the very top you are then at a rope bridge. 

Walk over the rope bridge and then you will find a winding path. Turn right. You then look out over the ocean and see in the distance the great Temple Island with the Golden Dome and the Western Drawbridge.  

Turn left again and follow the winding path first 2 steps further. You are at the 1st junction in the winding path. In the distance you see a wooden gate. You can now follow the path to the left, but I will first go up the right-hand path. So click on the right-hand path and you stand for junction 2.

On the left you see the wooden gate again and that is the entrance to the Jungle lagoon. Turn right, however, and you will see that the right-hand path ends at a large square hole.  

That square hole is the entrance to the Underwater Tunnel that will take you to the Crater Island later. But we are not going to Crater Island yet, so turn left again and now click on the wooden gate and you will be standing in front of this fence. Click on the fence again and you stand there with your nose against it On the right-hand post you see a small dark yellow beetle crawling up. Click on the creature. You zoom in on it and the little creature slaps his wings and you hear his sound.

 

If you move your cursor over the beetle then the beetle flies away. Zoom out and click on the fence again and now it will open. Go 3 steps along the path and then 2 steps down the stairs.  

The path then continues through a hollow tree. Walk through 3 passes and you go through the hollow tree and before you see the second hollow tree through which the path goes.  

Just stand still for a moment and turn to the left. You now see a large gray object in the jungle. It looks like a giant "dagger".  

Click twice in a row at the lowest point of the dagger and .... You end up in a small cave and see the Wooden Eye number 4 for you. 

Click on the Wooden Eye to zoom in on it and then click on it again to rotate the eye and hear the sound and see the symbol.  

This is the Sunner Eye. Mark the D'ni symbol and note that this figure belongs to the Sunner dolphin

Step backwards, turn left and go 2 steps forward and ........... you are back on the path.  

Go 2 steps forward into the 2nd hollow tree. Inside the tree the path splits to the left and to the right.  

Click on the right path and follow this 2 steps and then down the stairs.

Right in front of you is a wall trees and inside you see the Wahrk Statue. Walk on until you stand with your nose against the Wahrk Statue.

 

The jaws of the statue are closed. Turn left 2 times so that you see the path again. There is a lamp on the left and right of the path. There is a tiny little button on top of both lamps.  

Click on top of the left lamp and ....

the button of the left lamp rises and you will hear a sound behind you.

Turn back and see ..... the jaws of the Wahrk is now open and you see a staircase. So enter via the stairs into the jaws and you are standing in front of a wooden elevator. 

On the right is the blue button with which you can call the tram, but stay away from the button for now. The elevator handle is located on the left of the elevator. Get in the elevator. In the elevator you turn around automatically, so that the elevator handle is now to the right of you.  

Behind the Tram Knob is a Lever on the wall with which you can open and close the stairs and the Jaws. The elevator can go down and up. If you click the lift handle 1 time down you go down and you enter the tram station of the tram that connects the Jungle Island with the Plateau Island. However, this does not make any sense now. Take hold of the elevator lever and hold down your mouse button and then push your mouse up a bit and ..... You push the elevator lever up and ....... The Jaws closes again and the lift takes you up. 

The Marble Dome and the Throne of Ghen

Get out of the elevator and follow the iron path 3 steps forward. You are at a junction. You can now go straight or to the right. 

Straight ahead you see the large Dome turning. Go 3 steps on the straight path and ...... you hit your nose against the revolving Marble Dome. 

If you look at the quickly rotating dome very closely, you will see a ring of symbols on it. One of these symbols is yellow and that is the Symbol for this Dome.  

It is difficult to see, but try to trace this yellow symbol . Make a drawing of the yellow symbol and remember that this symbol belongs to this Marble Dome  of the Jungle Island.  In a while you need this symbol to open up this Marble Dome partially. On each of the 5 islands of Riven you will find such a Dome. In each of these 5 domes there is then a Linking Book to the "Universe of Ghen". Each of these domes consists of an Outer Dome and an Inner Dome. What you will have to do is to open the domes so that you can access those linking books and then go to the "Universe of Ghen" through such a book. The opening of a Dome should be done in 2 steps. Step 1 is done via a viewer where you have to set the symbol of the relevant dome. Then the Outer Dome stops turning and then partially opens and you can enter the Inner Dome a little bit. Step 2 is then to open the Inner dome and that goes through a code lock for which you first have to find the code. We are going to do step 1 for this first Dome, but first you have to do something else.

Now follow the iron path further around the Dome and then on to an iron staircase. Walk up the iron staircase and ....... 

Right in front of you is a small tower. Walk to the tower and open the door and enter.  

The door will close behind you again. You are standing now in front of the Throne of Ghen. Click on the throne and you sit on it and look at the door again. You see the two big levers.  

Click on the left lever and ........... 

The throne now takes you up and turns a quarter of a turn and you are lifted on top of the roof of the tower. 

You are now on the throne above the tower and you see the Lagoon below you and the D'ni village on the other side. 

Look down through the downwards finger and ........ Now you look into the lagoon and you will see the water and the Wahrk Gallows/Tower below you.

You also see the various holes in the water. Those holes are mooring places for the diving bell. You see that the top of the Gallows/Tower is connected to the walkway that runs along the rock on the right and you also see a big round iron door in that rock. That round door is the entrance to the Prison and a cave where you eventually have to enter. But you have to reach that round door through the Wahrk Gallows/Tower. For this you will have to go to the Gallows/Tower with the diving bell over the bottom of the lagoon. But because the middle round plateau of the Gallows/Tower is open you can never reach the center of the gallows/tower. That plateau has to be closed and that is what you are going to do here from your high position on the Throne now.

Click on the right lever of the throne and see ...... at the bottom of the gallows that middle plateau closes now.  

Mission succeeded, so click on the Left Lever again to lower the throne back into the tower. Click on the door to open it again and then step 1 step forward and you are outside again. Now follow the iron path back 9 steps in the first instance. You are almost back at the wooden lift in the tree. Turn left and now take the cross path.

Follow the cross-path 3 steps. You cannot go any further and now you stand at the Viewer. You now see the Marble Dome in full glory.  

Click on the Viewer to zoom in. You then look at the round viewing window. In the viewing window you can already see the symbols that are on the Dome flashing by.  

If you look closely, you see again that one of those symbols is yellow. The symbols flash quickly through the viewing window, so you have to look very sharp and act very quickly ...... As soon as you see the yellow symbol in the viewing window you click fast on the Button, on top of the viewer, to fix the yellow symbol in the round viewing glass  

 NB: This is difficult because the symbols pass very quickly. What you can do better is to keep clicking rapidly and constantly on the button....keep this up and....there will be moment  when you click at the right moment when that yellow symbol passes in the viewing window.

If you have "hit" the Yellow Symbol in the Viewer, then the Dome will stop rotating and then the Marble Dome will open up partially

Walk back to the Marble Dome and enter the gap between both dome halves and zoom in on the code lock.  

The code lock has a scale that goes from 1 to 25 and 5 sliders that can be moved over the scale. With the code lock you open the Inside dome, but you do not know the code yet. But at least you know what it looks like. 

Get out of the close-up, turn around and get out of the Marble Dome again. Turn right and follow the iron path all the way back to the wooden lift and get back on the elevator. Grab the Lever in the lift and pull it down to the middle.  

  The elevator will bring you down one floor. Step 1 step out of the elevator and then click on the Door / stairs lever on the left to open the Jaws of the Wahrk again.  

 Go down the stairs and go back over the path until you are back in the Hollow Tree.  

Just before the Hollow Tree you come across a child. 

The child laughs at you kindly and then runs away.

In the Hollow Tree you click again on the right path and then you go up the stairs and through the wooden gate

You are back on a wooden path with another watchtower in front of you. Walk further ahead and turn right and follow this wooden path to the Blue Cave.  

Go all the way through the Blue cave and on the other side go out again and now you are in the Lagoon

Follow the wooden path further and ....... in the distance that child is playing on the path ...... The mother comes around the bend, picks up the child and runs back. Follow the wooden path all the way to the jetty. The jetty is a mooring place for the diving bell. Turn right and follow the path further to the end, where you find the ladder to climb up to the Village.  

  Look up the ladder and then climb up in 3 clicks and ........ at the top of the ladder you find the D'ni Village and you are in front of one of the bulb houses where the D'ni live.  

Go over the gangway to the cottage and click on the door. Then click about 5 times on the round door knocker and ... ...... maybe you will see the occupant of this house.  

But it is also possible that you do not get to see anyone. Step backwards and click on the path, to the left of the house and ......

Follow the path to the next ladder Climb up and follow the path and you will be on the plateau where the diving bell is on. 

Walk to the diving bell. There is a large lever on the left in front of the diving bell. Click the lever forward and ..... 

The dive clock drops down and ends up in the air bubble where you have been before.  

You now have to go all the way back to the other side of the island, to mooring place 1 under the Stone Pond, because we'll make a nice ride in the Dive Bell over the bottom of the lagoon. Turn left and follow the wooden path back to the top ladder. Go down the ladder to the middle path and continue to the 1st ladder, at the house with the gangway. Go down the bottom ladder and you are back on the bottom wooden path. Follow the bottom path back to the jetty and then continue to the Blue Cave.

Cross back through the Blue Cave and when you get out of it you just follow the wooden path right in front of you. Do not go left through the gate into the Jungle, but just go straight ahead on the path. So you walk around the Jungle and you reach Junction1 of the stone path. Continue to the right to follow the path, over the rope bridge and then all the way down to the beach.

Again you see the 2 Dolphins disappear into the sea. Continue on the right on the path and .........

then up and down through the tunnel and then further to the end at the watchtower. Turn left, look down, go down the ladder to the Stone Pond.

Walk to the ladder behind the Pond and descend it again and then walk through the short tunnel to Mooring 1. Look down and see ... Under the metal ladder here is the diving bell.  

Click in the ladder hole to open the shutter of the diving bell and .......You are now sitting landed in the diving bell and you look out over the bottom of the Lagoon through the round window of the diving bell.

The diving bell:  

  You see 3 Levers. 2 Levers are placed in front of the window and 1 lever is on the right.

The upper Lever at the window is Lever 1 and with this you turn the Diving Bell. The lever under Lever 1 is Lever 2 and it is inserted into a slot. To the right of Lever 2 you'll see Lever 3

  • With Lever 1 you turn the Dive Bell left or right. 

  • You can move Lever 2 from left to right and back through the slot sliders.

  • With lever 2 you can switch tracks on which the dive bell sails.   

  • With lever 2 you turn the diving clock in the right direction.

  •  If lever 2 is on the right, the dive clock will go over the track going to the right.  

  • If lever 2 is left then the diving bell takes the left track.

  • With lever 3 you move the dive bell forward to the next intersection in the track or the next bubble.  

Now let's go sailing: Lever 1 and Lever 2 are now on the right. Do the following: 

Click on lever 1 to move it to the left. The dive clock now turns to the left and you can now see through the window a large boulder  

Let lever 2 stay on the right side. Click on Lever 3 to move forward to the next stop. You are then at a rail splitting.  

The rail goes to the left and also to the right. Check if Lever 2 is still on the right, because you want to continue on the right-hand rail. Click on Lever 3 again and you continue over the right-hand rail and end in a bubble. Look up and open the hatch and .......The hatch opens and you automatically stand on the ladder.  Now click on the ladder to climb further up.

You will now see the lagoon in front of you again with the water holes.  

Turn right and you will see that you are now in the corner next to the Wahrk Gallows/Tower. Turn right again and then head for the iron ladder in the rock wall. Look up the ladder.

It's a long way up. Click on the ladder 5 times and you are at the top of the Air bubble control house.

The Air Bell Control House:  

You see 5 handles in front of you. Don’t touch the handles at this moment.... turn around and then go to the window and look outside. 

Nice view, is not it?  

You now look out over the Lagoon and see all the air holes in the water and thus all possible stops for the diving bell. On the right is the Wahrk Gallows/Tower and on the left you see a small house. That is the School building and that is your next stop. However, not all water holes are now "open". 3 of the holes are still "closed" and the reason you are now in this control house is to ensure that these 3 water holes are opened so that you can eventually go to the Wahrk Gallows/Tower. 

Turn around and continue to the 5 levers. 2 of the handles are now up and the other 3 are down. Well, all 5 levers must be up, so click on each of the 3 unclear levers to also raise them. Ready.

Turn around and click into the ladder hole and descend the ladder all the way down, via the downward pointing finger. Down below you turn around and walk to the Diving Bell Ladder and get back into the Diving Bell.

To the School Building:  

Click on lever 1 to put it to the right again. The diving bell turns around. Click on Lever 3 to go back to the first switch. So now you come from the other side than when you started.

You can see that it is in fact a crossing You can turn left or right again. You want to go to the left, so click Lever 2 now to the left and then click on Lever 3 again to move forward. You now follow the left rail and come to a stop in the next bubble. 

Look up, open the hatch and click on the ladder. Then turn left or right and before you see the School building

School: Learn the D'ni numbers

Walk to the school, open the door and go inside. You are in the hall. You are not here because you have to do something important here in the schoolroom .... no ..... you are here to learn the D'ni symbols. Move forward all the way to the sphere that stands against the wall between the two blackboards. Click on the handle of the sphere and ........ 

You see a projection of Ghen's head in the sphere and he "addresses" the "collected D'ni population in a language that you cannot understand.

Then turn left twice and walk 2 steps back towards the hall. Turn right and click on the table with the Gallows game on it  

The Gallows game: Learn the D'ni numbers 1 to 25  

The Gallows game is a wooden toy and consists of 2 gallows on a round turntable. A doll is hanging on each gallows. In the round platform there is a small window and in it you now see a D'ni symbol. This is probably the symbol that you have already seen on the Beetle Wood Eye. 

There is a ring on one side of the round platform. If you click on the ring then the round platform will rotate and another symbol will appear in the window and at the same time 1 of the dolls will drop down in the gallows and you will hear a few ticks. The number of ticks you hear is associated with the symbol you see in the window. Always count the number of ticks and then you know what number the D'ni symbol is in the window. These symbols are therefore the D'ni numbers 1 to 10.

You now have to run the gallows plateau by clicking on the ring, and then always count the number of ticks if one of the figures falls down. You keep repeating this until you know all the numbers from 1 to 10. Draw the 10 D'ni symbols and add the number that they represent. If one of the puppets ends up in the trap, both dolls will go up again. Then just start again.

You will also see the same symbol in the window a few times. Just continue until you know all numbers from 1 to 10. After that it is a matter of logical thinking about this number system to come up with the first 25 numbers, as you can see below on the diagram

You now also know that those symbols that you have seen on the 4 Wooden Eyes are numbers, namely the numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 and that is they belong to: BEETLE = 2, FROG = 3, SUNNER = 4 and the WAHRK = 5, What you have to do with this knowledge, you do not know that yet. 

To the Wahrk Gallows

After you're done with this gallows game you can go and look at the blackboards and click on some other things in the classroom, but that is not really necessary. Then go back to the diving bell and climb in again and do the following again:

Put  lever 1 to the left again to turn the diving bell. Click on Lever 3 to go back over the track. You stop at the first left / right junction where you went to the right to the control house. Check if lever 2 is still on the left side and if so, click lever 3 again to continue over the left track to the next air bubble.

The diving bell goes over a slope and then through a "gate" and then ends in a bubble again. Look up again, open the hatch and click on the ladder again to climb out of the diving bell. You are now right opposite of the point from where you have started your journey under water. Turn 2 times left or right and see ..... you are finally at the Wahrk Gallows/Tower

  Wahrk Gallows / secret tunnel / Moiety Cave

If you have put all levers up in the Air Bell Check Room, the gangway to the Wahrk Gallows/Tower is now extended. If you have not raised the levers yet, the gangway is not extended and you cannot walk on to the Gallows/Tower. Walk 3 steps forward until you are right under the gallows. This is the middle circle that you have closed on the Throne. Right in front of you is a Triangle-shaped handle hanging on a chain.  

  Click on the Triangle lever, to see the thing in close-up, and then click on it again and ......... from above from the Gallows an iron bar is now coming down.  

  Click on the bar and ...... you will be pulled up all the way.

 You arrive at the top of the gallows at the gangway that connects the gallows with the upper iron path along the rock wall.

Walk through to the large round iron door and look through the round peephole and .......  

You look into the Prison Cell and you see that it is "inhabited". Ghen locks up here his opponents, apostate "believers", in anticipation of their execution through the Wahrk Gallows/Tower. The round door does not open. Step backwards, turn right and go 1 step forward and then click twice on the round button in the rock wall.  

  You see the Round door now open. So walk back and step into the cell and .......

 

..He .... that "resident" has disappeared. In the floor is a round pit grate, where that prisoner was sleeping. Click on the round pit grid to zoom in on it. Then click on the grid again and it will open. Then click in the hole and........ a lever comes up but the lever goes down immediately. This opens a secret door in the wall. 

So step through the opening. The secret door closes behind you again. You look into a very dark tunnel and you do not have a flashlight to light you up. 

Click 7 times forward, on the black screens,  to walk through this very dark tunnel. Always search for the forward pointing finger and then click with your forward pointing finger in your black screen. After having clicked 7 times ahead you will see daylight again.  

Go one step further and you are at the end of the tunnel at the ocean. Look at the wall on the left. There is a torch in the wall. 

Click with your hand on the torch and ....... the light in the torch goes on.  

Turn around and click 1 time in the tunnel to go back a little bit into the dark tunnel .... On the left you will see the 2nd torch. Click on the torch again to turn on the light here.  

Go one step further and light the third torch, which now sticks to the right side of the wall.  

  Again 1 step further and ........ you are standing in front of a square gate. Walk 1 step through the gate and then at the bottom left of your screen is the 4th torch.

So light the torch and go on one step further and then, on the right, turn on the 5th torch. Again 1 step further to turn on the 6th and last torch light. 

You now have all the lamp torches. Turn around and walk back to the square gate in 3 steps.  

Click on the stone door and ......... the door will close off the square gate but it opens up a corridor to the right.  

Now the right tunnel is open and all the torches are burning.

  Go all the way through the right tunnel and you end up in the:

Moiety Cave:  

 You are standing in a large circle which is formed by 25 standing stones. An animal is depicted on each of the stones. You can click on each Stone to view the stone in close-up. Then you can click on the Stone again to lower it slightly into the ground. Opposite the entrance, through which you enter the cave, is a sort of window in the wall. That is the "Gate" to the Moiety Age and you open this gate by clicking in the right order the right five Stones down. If you carefully study the Stones, you will probably now recognize 4 animals. You have already seen them before. It is the: Beetle, the Sunner, the Frog and the Wahrk. But what is the 5th animal? You do not know that yet, so you cannot solve this puzzle yet. But at least you now know where this cave is and you have now at least lit up the secret corridor. We will come back here later.

Turn around to the entrance / exit of this cave. You now have to go back through the tunnels to the prison cell and you do that now by clicking 13 times forward. Now you are back at the secret door of the cell. You see right in the corner the handle to open the door, so click on the handle to open the door again.  

 Walk back into the Cell and then back out through the open circular door.  

Turn right and follow the iron path down and to the end and ........ then click twice on the ladder to lower the ladder. 

Climb down the ladder and ..... You are then back on the bottom wooden path. 

Turn around and follow the wooden walkway back to the Blue Cave and .......... cross the Blue Cave again to the gorge where the Jungle gate is. You can walk around the Jungle again to the two splits in the path or you go through the jungle again.....it's up to you but make sure you'll get on the path at the other side of the jungle, on crossroad 1 or crossroad 2

 

When you went through the jungle than you'll end op at crossroad 2. When you went around the jungle then you come at crossroad 1 and you'll have to follow the left path to crossroad 2. At crossroad 2 follow the right pat to the large square hole, which is in the ground at the end of the path.  

You see a mine cart under you in the hole, so jump into the cart to sit in it. Before you is now the beginning of the long tunnel that will take you to the Crater Island.  

On the left is a lever, so click on the lever and .......

then goes through an underwater tunnel over a bridge to the Crater Island and dives into a tunnel again  

  At the end of the tunnel you will automatically get out your cart and you will end up in a "slide" that drops you on a wood chop mill. Lucky the mill isn’t working.
