Part two: Underground

Chapter 12: Cave

 A Game of Mastermind  

You are deep underground.

PS: There is now a very annoying bug in the game so the game can linger endlessly on the load screen. The makers have solved this problem in the latest version of the game. If you have purchased and installed the game via STEAM, your game will automatically be updated to the latest version. However, if you have obtained the game through other channels then you will have to look for patches for Quern yourself to solve this problem.

When you are out of the elevator a gate will slide up and the elevator will close, you cannot go up anymore.  

You can look around through the cave but you cannot do anything here. You can only enter the tunnel opposite the elevator.

Walk to the tunnel entrance and........another cut scene  with light spirit Gamana follows an she will tell once more a whole story.  

Afterwards the spirit disappears in the tunnel, so follow her into the tunnel

You enter an open space with a wooden door on the left, but it is locked.  

Straight ahead is another tunnel but it has no bottom. On the right of it is a holder for a torch.  

You can use the white torch here but nothing happens. Just under the torch you see sparks.  

On your right your tunnel goes on, so go right and follow the tunnel further. You go around a few right-angled turns.  

At the end, go right and up the stairs and then turn right again.

You are in a cave and you see a locked cupboard with a lamp / button, but it has no power. Next to it is a low table. Go stand at the table. The first thing you see is a battery that is connected to a cylinder with a keyhole. This cylinder is connected through wires with the battery and with a cabinet that has 4 cubes. Above that 4 cubes cabinet are 7  white lights and they are on. There's also a letter on the table. Read the letter  

The Key puzzle:

Next to the table is a little stairs that goes up to a platform. On that platform hangs a cupboard against the wall.

 You also see that there are wires to go to that cupboard and also to the other locket cabinet that stand in the left corner  

Opposite the low table is another low table, you see a cabinet with 4 columns with 6 compartments, numbered 1 to 6.

On the right side of that table is an iron chest. Open that iron chest and you will find a key inside it. Take the key.  

Look at this key in inventory.....This key has 4 lips. Those 4 lips all have a differend shape and the accually are numbers

You must adjust the lips of this key to fit in the lock of the wooden locked door, back in the corridor. 

But first you must adjust the key to open up the locked cabinet open, on the left side of the table. On the open shelves cabinet is a note

View the note, it is a clue for the key puzzle......It's a clue for the Mastermind puzzle that you now must solve. 

I don't want to be a pain in your ass, but surely you understand this clue?

You now have to adjust those 4 lips of the key and you do this it. This you have to do with a game of Mastermind. You know how to play Mastermind dont you?.  You adjust the key by putting the key in the cabinet with numbers and then you select 4 numbers on that cabinet. The key goes into that cabinet and the lips get adjusted and then the key will comes out again. Take the key back an put it in the keyhole of the cylinder and......The cubes of the cubes cabinet will turn yellow ore white and they will spinn around. Here you need that clue note to know which of the 4 numbers you have pressed on the numbers cabinet are correct....Yellow means a number is correct but not in the right place. White means a number is correct and in the right place. You have 7 attemps, as you can see from the 7 lights that are on above the cubes cabinet.

This is a random puzzle. It is a variation of the Mastermind puzzle. In principle it could happen that you immediately have the right combination, but I guess that will be programmed so that this does not happen. After you put your key in the cylinder, look at the box with the 4 cubes. How many turns and what color do they have? White for a good number in the right place and yellow for a good number in the wrong place. So you have to have 4 white rotating cubes.  

Configuring the Key: A Mastermind puzzle  

Start with putting the Key into the keyhole of the cylinder to see if any of the 4 cubes turn yellow or white and spinn around.

If you are lucky all 4 cubes will be white and spinning, indicating that your key is good right away. But this is almost never the case. As you can see on the picture above my key gave 3 yellow cubes so I had to reprogram the key. Take the key back and turn around to the Numbers Cabinet. Place the key on the bottom of the cabinet with the 24 numbered boxes. Then press in 4 number boxes on the cabinet......You only may use 1 number in each row.  

The key goes inside the cabinet to get reprogrammed.....The 4 lips will be adjusted according the 4 numbers you have pressed on the numbers cabinet. Then take the key back and insert it into the cylinder again. Look at the cubes again .......If you are lucky you get 4 white cubes,  but I don't think that this is the case after just 1 attempt. So you need to repeat this until you get 4 white spinning cubes.

You see that it is just a game of Mastermind. Somewhat easier then the real Mastermind game because every number 1 til 6 can only be 1 times in the combination. Note down which part of the bit of the key belongs to which number. Take the key out of the cylinder and put it back on the tray of the number cabinet and try again to get 4 rotating white cubus. You got 7 attemps to get it right. If you do not get it right after 7 attemps the puzzle will reset to generate new combinations for the key and you must do it all over again

When you finaly have it right then you have 4 white rotating cubus and the cabinet, in the left corner next of the table,  will be open. 

Also the cabinet at the top of the stairs will be partially open.

Go up the stairs to that cabinet on top. 

There is yet another fence for that box at the top of the stairs. Locked of course. In the middle of the fence is a round hole where a gear fits. 

Go back down and to now open cupboard in the left corner.

 In the bottom part of the cupboard you see a picture of the 4 lips of the key and there is a round button

Take this round button and look at that key lips pucture

 .......... you have to configure the key once again but then according to this picture, they are 4 numbers. 

If you've been smart, you've noted which lip belongs to which number, if not, here is the solution. 

Take the key from the cylinder and place it at the bottom of the number cabinet again and then click the numbers: 6 - 2 - 1 - 3.  

The key is made, pick up the key when it is ready. Then walk back through the tunnel and go to the locked wooden door.  

If you look closely you will see that the keyhole is protected with a rack, that is also locked. It is a cruciform lock. Go to your inventory and inspect the round button you just found, on the back you will see a cross-shaped protrusion. You need this now so make sure you have selected this button. Go out of your inventory and click on the lock of the rack, the button is placed therein and rotates. You also have that button back in your inventory because you will need it again. The rack folds down. Now select your key now click on the keyhole to unlock the door with the key

Click on the door handle and the door opens.

Walk through the tunnel to the room behind it. At the end you see a machine and an open cupboard with a few drawings on the right. 

Turn around to see a box on the wall, open the box. There is a disc in the box.  Take the disc

View this disc in your inventory, there is a cross-shaped hole at the front and a gear at the back. You know where to use it, but first you go to the machine. It is a large tube with a small tube next to it. At the top of the big tube you see the drawing of a piece of a strange ring. At the bottom a lamp is lit and underneath there is a locked drawer. A lamp lights up on the small tube and there are 5 rings underneath that you can slide left or right

This is just like the flow pattern of the iron cabinets. Start at the light but where to next?. There is no obvious end point you think. However, if you twist the ring 4 you will see a light coming out, this is the end point. It is not that difficult, but here is the solution.   The lamp on the big tube goes out and you can pull open the drawer. Inside is the piece of strange ring that you see at the top of the big tube.  Take that half of a ring from the drawer

Go back to the Mastermind cave and there go up the stairs to the platform with the cupboard with the iron fence.  

Select the disc you just found in the wooden box and click on the round opening in the fence. The disc is placed therein.

Now select the round button with the cross-shaped protrusion and then click on the center of the round disc.  

This fits in and the gate opens, at the bottom of the rope hangs a box containing a block. Grab this block.

Go to your inventory and view this thing from all sides, at the back you will see 4 contact points.  

This thing can be used with the torch holder in front of the corridor without bottom. 

Walk back to the room with the door and go to the torch holder,  

select the Block and click it on the torch holder. Then place your white crystal in the torch holder.  

You get the white crystal torch back automatically and a floor rises up from below.  

Walk into the hallway and you will come to an elevator, step into the elevator and click on the button.  

You sink deeper into the ground, when the elevator stops you walk down the stairs and over the walkway to a large round disc. 

This is the Underground Square.

In the middle is a pillar. Left and right are tunnels but they are blocked. Stand at the pillar and select the half ring and place it on top of the pillar.  

The half ring is put in there and the left tunnel goes open.
