Chapter 2: The Deep Forest Part 1

NB: Tove has a lot to do and she has to do it in various areas. She will also have to go back and forth between the different areas here in the Deep Forest. As a player you now have a lot of freedom to do things. There is no set order in which to do things. My walkthrough tells you how I did it but this is not the only way you can do it all. You can do things in a different order if you want

Free the Mother Tree

A: "Portal Square"

The teleporter portal has disappeared and it has not taken Tove. Where is Lars, Tove wonders. Tove is still in the large clearing in the forest by the lake. We will call this place the "Square" because this is the central place from which Tove will initially investigate the areas to the left and right of it.  Walk up to the lake. Across the lake, Tove sees an old castle and says something about it. There is a rowboat on the left

Walk to the rowboat. There is an oar in the rowboat. The rowboat no longer has a bottom, so the thing is no longer usable.

But Tove can use the oar so take the oar

Walk back to the center circle. Around the center circle are 4 statues on the 4 pedestals. Tove does not want to examine those 4 statues yet. On the left you see a thick tree with a door in it. The mushrooms that were on the center circle have disappeared into that left tree. You can also see a thick tree with an open entrance on the right. We now first go to that left tree. Walk to the left tree and look at the door in the tree. Tove hears sounds coming from the tree and she hopes it is Lars who makes the sounds.

The door in the tree is closed tightly. Drag the oar from inventory and click the thing on the door in the tree and ....

Tove uses the oar to pry open the tree door, so now walk into the tree.

The Tree of Many

It is a thick hollow tree and as soon as Tove steps in, Eyes appear and the tree asks who entered.

This tree is the Tree of Many and there is now a long conversation with Tove in which the Tree explains a few things

This Tree of Many is connected by its roots to the Mother Tree. There are more trees that are connected to the Mother Tree but apparently all trees, including the Mother Tree, are sick because the Tree of Many no longer sees or feels the Mother Tree and this has been going on for some time. The Mother Tree can be found on the other side of the Square. If Tove helps the Mother Tree and thereby restores the forest, the Forest will be able to help her in her search for Lars.

In the middle of the tree is a gray door. That gray door is the entrance to the root system that connects this tree with the Mother Tree, but the door doesn't work now because Mother Tree is sick. The exit on the right brings Tove back to the square. But we now first leave this Tree of Many via the left exit

Area to the left of the Tree of Many

Tove is then in the snowy forest on the left side of the Tree of Many. Continue to the left until you see the entrance gate of the cemetery and the church

Continue to the entrance gate and look at it with your eye. Unfortunately ..... the gate is locked with a chain and a padlock

Tove thinks that if you had something she could force the padlock but at the moment she has nothing to do this with

Walk into the corner to the left of the gate and then look at the tombstone with your eye. Then walk back to the main path and then follow the main path further to the left

Tove then reaches the stone arch bridge and she hears groans and wails. Go down the snowy slope at the bridge and ..... We meet .....

TrollHilde

A conversation with Hilde follows. Hilde complains that there is a "Human Thorn" in her shoulder and she asks if Tove can help her

When Hilde is done whining about her pain, make sure you get the talking cursor. Then click and Tove sees that a dagger is in Hilde's right shoulder

Tove can use that dagger, but she has nothing with which to pull the dagger from Hilde's shoulder

Go back up the left slope and then follow the snowy path further to the left. As you continue along the path, keep pressing your F-key. There are posts along the path on which ravens, carved from wood, have been placed. At the first 2 of those posts you can pick up a Loot item near a tree in the foreground. It is a crysalis plant. Pick up the plant and then continue to the left

Snow Hut and Gate A

Tove then reaches a snow hut. Continue a little further but do not enter the hut yet. On the left a ladder leans against a platform this is built in the trees.

Do not climb up yet, but continue to the left and ..... Tove then reaches Gate A. Unfortunately, Tove cannot continue here because Gate A is blocked by strange stems.

Look at those weird stems with your eye ...... Tove needs something to cut these stems out of the way.

What Tove needs is the dagger that sticks into Hilde's shoulder but to get that dagger out of Hilde's shoulder she needs something with which to do that.

Walk back to the ladder and now climb up the ladder to the platform

At the top you see a number of bird nests. You can view the 3 lowest hanging bird's nest with your eye.

The first 2 bird nests are empty but in the 3rd nest Tove finds a Hair Pin and she stores this thing in her backpack

Climb down the ladder again and dive into the snow hut. Inside the snow hut you can go further down a ladder on the right, but don't do this yet.

There are a few wooden birds and a bed. You can't see the bed and those wooden birds with your eye

Under the left bird is a Loot Item on the floor. Pick up that Loot Item ... it is a wooden bird feather from 1 of the wooden birds

Now go down the ladder to the bottom floor of the hut

When Tove is down you will see 3 wooden barrels in the corner. There is a can of Porridge Oats with those barrels. Take the Porridge Oats

A nasty Bear Trap hangs to the right of the wooden door. Take the Bear Trap

Walk to the left. On the left side of the hut is a baby crib on the work table. Watch the baby crib.

In the back in the corner you see a barrel under the other workbench. There is something in that barrel so look at that barrel with your eye and ...

In the barrel is a hungry Krokeling who has hidden itself here out of fear of his mother.

This frog cub is a Krokeling but it doesn't want to say its name. Tove promises to bring this frog cub a snack if she finds it

Remember that this Krokkeling is hiding here because you have to bring him back to his mother later on in the game.

Climb back up the ladder and then exit this hut.

Follow the path back to the stone arch bridge and while doing so try to walk up the slopes among the snowy pine  trees.

Tove cannot walk up between the trees so keep returning to the main path and you will eventually earn the Scenic Route Badge

Hilde is still wailing under the bridge but you can't help her right now, so cross the bridge and return to the entrance gate of the cemetery

Cemetery, Mausoleum and the Church

Walk against the fence again and now drag the Hair Pin to it and let go and .....

...... with the hair pin Tove forces the padlock. Walk through the now open gate into the cemetery

Cemetery: Waytree 1

Go straight to the left and ..... To the left of the cemetery is a tree with a gray door in it. Look at the tree .... Tove wonders if this is the Mother Tree but it is not

Left and right 2 ravens are sitting on the roots of the tree. Those ravens block the connection of this tree with the Mother Tree and the Tree of Many

Chase away the 4 ravens, who are left and right on the thick roots and .......

The tree "wakes up" and a conversation follows. This is one of the 5 Waytrees and it is also connected to the Mother Tree through the roots

There is such a Waytree in every area of the Deep Forest. Once Tove has freed the Mother Tree and those Way Trees from the Ravens, she can quickly travel through the gray doors through the Mother Tree and to each of those areas. When the conversation with this Waytree is over, walk further up. There are a number of tombstones in the cemetery. Look at each tombstone with your eye and read and hear what Tove reads on the headstones. Start with 4 tombstones on the left front of the church

Then go to the right side of the church and read every tombstone there too. You are then at the Mausoleum building.

Mausoleum

On the right side of the mausoleum building is a lonely tombstone. Walk up to it and also look at the gravestone with your eye

The text on this tombstone says that the daughter of the Markessons is buried here. This daughter has drowned. Tove must later know the name of this daughter, but to find out this name we first have to go to church. If you have now viewed all tombstones here, you will earn another Badge

To the right of the entrance to the mausoleum hangs a Horse Head. View the horse's head.

The horse's head is a bit loose, but Tove cannot take this horse's head now

Now enter the Mausoleum. Look inside each of the 4 stone slabs to read the texts on it. You also see a sand hole in the floor. Check out that sand hole.

There is a stone Disc in the sand hole, but Tove cannot do anything with it yet

Some eggshells are lying on the floor at the bottom right. The eggshells are a Loot item so pick them up

There is a turnable thing to the left of the entrance. This turntable holds that horse's head, but Tove cannot grab the turntable yet

Go outside and walk to the big Church and enter it now

Church:

Tove ends up in the large church hall. Walk up through the middle

You will then get an overview screen of the hall. There are 4 grave tiles in the floor of the hall. On the screenshot I have marked them as A, B, C, D.

There is a rope on the front bench on the right. Take that rope

Combine this rope with the Bear Trap in inventory and you then have a Bear Trap on a rope

Now go to each of the 4 grave tiles A, B, C, D and look at them with your eye. Tove then tells for each tile who is buried underneath.

You should know one of these 4 names later. If I remember correctly it's Karl Karlsson but we know for sure when we need to use this name

Then walk from tile D to point E

At point E you can pick up another Loot item. It is the shield of a beetle

From E you walk to F. F is a crack in the floor and Tove reports that there is apparently a cellar under the floor. Tove can not widen the crack.

Continue to the small altar G. There is a book on the altar. Look at the altar with your eye and Tove will then take the book and put it in her backpack

So this book is the Parish Register and it contains all the names of the deceased people buried outside under the tombstones

Go to ladder H and climb up. Tove ends up at the Church Bell

Climb up the next ladder to the beam on which the church bell hangs. On the right is a beautiful yellow flower. Take the flower

This is a Whispervine Flower

The heavy church bell hangs from a thick rope, but the thing also hangs right above crack F, in the floor of the hall. What if Tove could cut the rope? But with what? Climb back to the hall via both ladders and then walk back through the hall and exit from the cherry via the bottom left.

Go back to the tombstone to the right of the Mausoleum. Drag the Parish Register book to the tombstone and click and ....

Tove then knows the name of the drowned girl buried here and she was Ignes Jolhaffsson Markesson

This name is now marked in the ParishRegister book because Tove will need this later

NB: You can wait to do this until Tove knows that she needs to now the name of the girl that's burried here.

But since we here now it seems logic to to this now. It saves you a fair bit if trouble later on

Now that Tove the Bear has tied the trap to the rope, she can pull the dagger in Hilde's shoulder out with it.

So go back to the Stone Arch  Bridge and now stand above Hilde on the bridge. Drag the Bear trap to Hilde and then let go and ......

With the Beren Val, Tove is now pulling the dagger out of Hilde. Hilde is grateful and disappears to her cave under the bridge.

You have not only earned the Dagger but also a Badge

Walk down the slope to the left or right to where Hilde was. Look at the direction indicator and then dive into Hilde's cave

Hilde is cooking some nasty stuff in her cave while playing a tune on her flute. To Hilde's left is a nice green slice of Troll Snot stuck to the wall.

That green Troll Snot is a Loot Item so get it to store it in the Loot section of Tove's diary

There is a handful of pebbles on the floor. Grab those pebbles because Tove will need them urgently later

Then make sure you get the talking cursor on Hilde and then start having a chat with her.

Tove then asks Hilde what kind of tune she is whistling. Hilde's whistle is a troll whistle. Tove needs Hilde's flute but she doesn't want to give her flute to Tove. Then look at the cooking pot hanging over the fire. There is a conversation about the tea that Hilde is brewing in her cooking pot. Hilde is brewing Troll Tea and she uses human bones for that. Hilde would like to drink human tea because then she no longer has to kill people to brew Troll Tea. Tove promises to bring Hilde a tea bag when she finds one.

This conversation about tea is useful information for Tove because it gives her an idea of how to get hold of Hilde's flute.

Exit Hilde's cave. So now Tove has Hilde's dagger, so let's see if she can remove the stems from Gate A with the dagger

So return to Gate A, left past the snow hut. Then drag the Dagger to the stems and let go and .......

....... Unfortunately ... the dagger is too blunt. Tove has to sharpen the dagger somewhere

Mother Tree:

Go back to the bridge and then continue over the bridge to the right until you are in the Tree of Many again.

Whenever you are in the Tree of Many you can talk to it via the talk cursor above the gray door.

The Tree of Many sees that Tove now has Hilde's dagger and tells Tove to go to the other side of the forest to sharpen the dagger

So leave the Tree of Many via the right exit and Tove is back on the "Square".

Now Tove will take a look at those 4 animal statues, which are around the middle circle. So stand at each of the 4 pedestals and then click on it with your eye and Tove will tell you which animal is on the pedestal.  Front left is the Wolf, rear left is the Bear,  right front is the Raven and rear right is a Stag. So these are the 4 Guardians of the Forest and they each have their own area to watch over and Tove has to go to each of those areas

The Stag is located at the entrance of the Mother Tree. Now walk into the Mother Tree

6 ravens are in the Mother Tree and they are the cause that the connection between the Mother Tree and the other 6 Trees is broken. 2 times 2 ravens sit left and right on the thick roots. However, 2 ravens are high in the top center. First chase away the 4 ravens that are on the left and right on the thick roots. You do that by running into those ravens.

Then drag the Pebbles to the 2 ravens that are high up in the middle to chase them away too and .......

Mother Tree comes back to life and a long conversation with Tove follows.

Mother feels that Tove has also freed the first Waytree, in the cemetery, and then she opens the doors to that tree and also the door to the Tree of Many. Those are doors A and B.

There are still 4 Waytrees to free and as soon as Tove has freed another tree from the ravens, the doors C, D, E and F will also be open.

We will then leave Tove because we are now switching to

Utangard

You now get to know Rörka and Röki and you see what has happened to Lars.

Watch and listen because I'm not going to write all this out for you.

A raven comes to Rörka to report that Tove has now liberated the Mother Tree and Rörka is not happy about that

At one point, Röki wants to play with the ball and rolls the ball to Lars. You then have to roll the ball back to Röki a few times

After you have rolled the ball back to Röki about 3 times, his mother Rörka has had enough and she starts the procedure to sacrifice Lars on behalf of Röki

We then return to Tove in the Mother Tree. Mother will now also open the right exit so Tove can explore the area to the right of Mother Tree.

You also earned another Badge

Before you leave the Mother Tree via the right exit, you can first see where you will end up when you step through the doors / portals A and B because they are now activated.

Door / Portal A takes you back to the Tree of Many. A conversation follows.

The gray door in this tree is now also activated so after the conversation you go through the door back to the Mother Tree.

Back in the Mother Tree you step through door / portal B and ......

Tove ends up back at the cemetery via the Waytree that stands there. The door in this Waytree has now also been activated so step through it to return to the Mother Tree.

Now leave the Mother Tree via the right exit because we continue with:
