The original game was released on 5 Cd-roms. Now there's a download version made with Scumm and you can get it at Gog.com
The game starts in a room in the cave on Myst island. Atrus will send you to Riven to free his wife Catherine. Catherine is kept prisoner by Ghen, the father of Atrus. But Atrus does not dare to travel to Riven himself with a Linking Book because he is afraid that Ghen will escape. Atrus sends you to Riven and he gives you his Riven diary and a book that looks like a Linking Book to link back to Myst island.
But
in reality this is not a Linking Book but a "Prison Book" that Ghen
must bring to his 1 mans prison island. You must imprison Ghen in this book in
order to free Catherine. Atrus puts the finishing touches to his Riven Linking
Book and then he pushes the thick book towards you and .....
........
you will be sucked into the book to end up in Riven ...... and in ...
